Boycott Russian vodka

Hit these fuckers where it hurts.

“Propaganda of homosexuality”: the wording sounds almost quaint in English, like a panicky phrase out of the 1970s backlash to the early gay liberation movement in the United States. But in Russia, the phrase is current: This week lawmakers have been talking of banning “propaganda of homosexuality” — whatever the phrase may mean.

The campaign began a couple of months ago, when two provincial Russian cities, Ryazan, in central Russia, and Arkhangelsk, in the north of the country, passed such laws. On Wednesday, St. Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city, approved its own ban. The next day, lawmakers in Moscow promised to pass a similar measure in the capital, and the speaker of the upper house of Parliament declared it was time to take the ban national.

German Intelligence Service (BND): We know nothing, nothing!

Investigators have found that in 2007 the German Intelligence Service (BND) destroyed files of 250 BND employees who had been in the Nazi SS or Gestapo.

The BND confirmed the loss, calling it "regrettable and annoying".

Four independent historians are investigating the BND's old links with the Nazis. They say some of the missing papers concern suspected war criminals.

Best bullshit:

The historians did not allege a deliberate cover-up, but they urged the BND not to destroy any more files.

Maybe the dog ate them.

Ruth Marcus: Idiot of the Day

Again she wins the coveted Idiot of the Day award.

I do pity her daughter, having to experience this much dumb on a daily basis.

Emma Sullivan, you’re lucky you’re not my daughter. (Dangerous sentence, I know: My daughters might agree.)

If you were my daughter, you’d be writing that letter apologizing to Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback for the smartalecky, potty-mouthed tweet you wrote after meeting with him on a school field trip.

Also, that smartphone? The one you posed with, proudly displaying the tweet in which you announced that Brownback “sucked” and added the lovely hashtag #heblowsalot? Turned off until you learn to use it responsibly.

I may sound alarmingly crotchety here, but something is upside down in the modern world, which has transformed Sullivan into an unlikely Internet celebrity and heroine of the liberal blogosphere.

F*cked up Science: Genetically modified Bird Flu

What's wrong with these people?

Inside a Dutch medical facility is a potentially devastating weapon that could kill millions: A genetically modified version of the H5N1 bird flu, engineered to be easily transmitted among ferrets. And the researchers who figured out how to do it would like to share their work with the world.

Science, Rebecca Boyle, Avian flu, bird flu, controversy, h5n1 avian flu, health, pandemic flu, pandemics, scientific studiesIt’s a complicated conundrum, more so than it may seem at first blush. Biosecurity experts are now debating whether published research on the engineered flu (there are a couple papers in question) could be used as a blueprint for a bioweapon. But influenza researchers argue that virologists need every weapon they can find to fight the flu, which includes studying the ways it might spread to mammals. The National Institutes of Health funded the work.

The Commission scolaire de Montréal: Idiots of the Day

This kind of crap is nothing new in Quebec, but this takes it to a new low.

The playgrounds, hallways and cafeterias of Quebec’s largest school board will soon be French-only zones as authorities move to silence other languages, even during recess.

In a bid to ensure its 110,000 students master French, the Commission scolaire de Montréal has announced a new code of conduct declaring French de rigueur at all times during the school day.

Best bullshit:

Diane De Courcy, the board’s chairwoman, said the approach will be persuasive not punitive.

“There will be no language police,” she said. Instead, monitors who overhear children using their mother tongue during recess will simply remind them of the rules.

“If they are automatically switching to another language, [the monitor] will gently tap them on the shoulder — not on the head — to tell them, ‘Remember, we speak French. It’s good for you.’

Manitoba hockey hazing sounds gayer than 50 drag queens

WTF, boys will be boys? No wonder they project such homophobia, they could have their own float in Pride.

The mother of a junior hockey player who was allegedly hazed by his Manitoba teammates says she is not pleased to hear that no charges will be laid in connection with the incident.

RCMP announced Monday that no criminal charges will be laid in connection with the Neepawa Natives hockey hazing incident, following a police investigation.

The incident attracted national attention last month, when the parents of a 15-year-old player for the Natives who came forward with hazing accusations told CBC News that their son was forced to dance in the team's dressing room and drag around water bottles that were tied to his genitals.

Seven rookies in all were subjected to similar treatment and older players rated the younger ones on their ability to endure the pain, according to parents.

UK secretly helping Canada push tar sands project

Guess Harper was right when he said we wouldn't recognize Canada after he's through, he'll have polluted the shit out of it.

The UK government has been giving secret support at the very highest levels to Canada's campaign against European penalties on its highly polluting tar sands fuel, the Guardian can reveal.

At the same time, the UK government was being lobbied by Shell and BP, which both have major tar sands projects in Alberta, and opened a new consulate in the province to "support British commercial interests".

At least 15 high-level meetings and frequent communications have taken place since September, with David Cameron discussing the issue with his counterpart Stephen Harper during his visit to Canada, and stating privately that the UK wanted "to work with Canada on finding a way forward", according to documents released under freedom of information laws.

Thailand's Anudith Nakornthap, the King and his court: Idiots of the Day

A government minister in Thailand has warned Facebook users that anyone pressing the "like" button on posts that might be offensive to the monarchy could be prosecuted under the country's strict lèse-majesté laws.

The warning was given two days after a Thai criminal court sentenced Amphon Tangnoppaku, 61, to 20 years in prison for sending text messages deemed insulting to the country's queen.

Amphon was found guilty on four counts and sentenced to five years' consecutive jail on each charge.

Thailand's laws against lèse-majesté (insulting a monarch) are the most severe in the world. Even repeating the details of an alleged offence is illegal.

A report in the Bangkok Post quoted the information technology minister, Anudith Nakornthap, saying that anyone who had pressed "like" on items related to lèse-majesté on Facebook should go back and delete all their reactions and comments. Such material could end up being copied by people who set up fake pages to insult the monarchy, he said.

"If they don't delete them, they can end up violating the computer crime act for indirectly distributing inappropriate content," Anudith said.

Any leader that has to resort to these kind of actions deserves all the ridicule they get.

RCMP in B.C.: Idiots of the Day

RCMP now admit they were keeping tabs on a Grand Forks, B.C. graffiti artist.

Dion Nordick found two surveillance cameras hidden in trees near his trailer home in June. He took them down and found pictures of himself and friends coming and going from his home.

Nordick also found hundreds of pictures of drug busts, suicides and assaults that hadn't been erased from the internal memory card.

The RCMP now admit the cameras were initially installed to monitor a suspected grow-op. Staff Sgt. Dan Seibel says when police searched the home, they found no plants, but did find graffiti stencils and paint.

Officers then installed two new cameras to watch Dion Nordick, a suspected graffiti artist.

Seibel says the graffiti artist allegedly had been tagging Grand Forks with a logo bearing guns and the word "dissent."

Harper and Co. butches up military

For me, this American style chest thumping is embarrassing.

The federal government paid tribute to its role in the Libya campaign Thursday with a flashy display of military might on Parliament Hill, a ceremony that some observers viewed as a way of declaring Canada's more muscular role on the global stage.

The celebratory event, which was attended by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Defence Minister Peter MacKay as well as a host of military officials, included a flypast by CF-18 fighter jets, a 21-gun salute and the awarding of a Meritorious Service Cross (Military Division) to Lt.-Gen. Charles Bouchard, the Canadian air force general who commanded the NATO mission in Libya.

Some saw it as a conventional victory parade. "It is a celebration of sorts, there's no question, but it's within military tradition," said Michel Drapeau, a professor of military law at the University of Ottawa, who pointed to similar victory parades held in Canada for V-Day and the Korean War.

But others remarked on how out-of-character the ceremony seemed for a country that for decades has tended to play down its military. Stephen Clarkson, a University of Toronto professor with an expertise in Canadian foreign policy, views the ceremony as an exercise in "self-glorification."

Either way, the spectacle left little doubt that Harper is putting increased emphasis on the role of Canada's military in international affairs.

No, really? Canadian wages plummet under Harper

Canadian workers are failing to keep up with the rising cost of living as real wages continue to fall dramatically, new data from Statistics Canada shows.

The agency reported Thursday that average weekly earnings for non-farm payrolls fell 0.3 per cent in nominal terms in September to $872.75.

When the 3.2 per cent inflation rate for the month is taken into consideration, the drop in real wages was more dramatic.

On a year-over-year basis, the increase in earnings was a mere 1.1 per cent, the lowest level of growth since November 2009.

Average weekly earning gains have been dropping steadily since the spring, when they were as high as 4.1 per cent in April, well above the inflation rate.

With income from investments also soft because of the volatility in equity markets, analysts said it is fair to assume Canadians' average standard of living is also dropping.

Mitt Romney's pathetic lying campaign ad

Truth? We don't need no stinkin' truth.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's first ad of the 2012 presidential campaign quotes President Obama out of context in what the Romney campaign is calling a deliberate attempt to show that Mr. Obama "doesn't want to talk about the economy."

In the ad, which goes up Tuesday in New Hampshire, Mr. Obama is heard saying "if we keep talking about the economy, we're going to lose."

But when Mr. Obama made that statement, he was actually quoting an aide to John McCain, his 2008 rival for the presidency. "Senator McCain's campaign actually said, and I quote, if we keep talking about the economy, we're going to lose," Mr. Obama said.

In an email to Politico, the Romney camp said it used the out-of-context quote "intentionally."

Who wrote Shakespeare?

Eric Idle knows:

While it is perfectly obvious to everyone that Ben Jonson wrote all of Shakespeare’s plays, it is less known that Ben Jonson’s plays were written by a teen-age girl in Sunderland, who mysteriously disappeared, leaving no trace of her existence, which is clear proof that she wrote them. The plays of Marlowe were actually written by a chambermaid named Marlene, who faked her own orgasm, and then her own death in a Deptford tavern brawl. Queen Elizabeth, who was obviously a man, conspired to have Shakespeare named as the author of his plays, because how could a man who had only a grammar-school education and spoke Latin and a little Greek possibly have written something as bad as “All’s Well That Ends Well”? It makes no sense. It was obviously an upper-class twit who wished to disguise his identity so that Vanessa Redgrave could get a job in her old age.

It’s interesting how the people who have been evicted for setting up an encampment in a place they shouldn’t be want to evict the guy who was elected to uphold Toronto’s laws.

Communism is like that. Things get flipped around.

The Movement are communists: Check

Conservative Bullsh*t: Rick Perry's lazy, lying Obama ad

Did President Obama argue that “Americans are lazy,” as Perry alleges? No. He argued that American policy makers have been lazy in not doing more to attract businesses. (Obama’s standard line about the American people, by contrast, is that they are the “best workers in the world.”)

Climate change episode of Frozen Planet won't be shown in the U.S.

LALALALALALA I can't hear you....

An episode of the BBC's Frozen Planet documentary series that looks at climate change has been scrapped in the U.S., where many are hostile to the idea of global warming.

British viewers will see all seven episodes of the multi-million-pound nature series throughout the Autumn.

But U.S. audiences will not be shown the last episode, which looks at the threat posed by man to the natural world.

It is feared a show that preaches global warming could upset viewers in the U.S., where around half of people do not believe in climate change.

Best bullshit:

Discovery had dropped the full seventh episode due to 'scheduling issues', the spokesman added.

Co-ordinated effort or monkey see monkey do as Occupy movement under attack

This has been happening everywhere all week...

The City of London Corporation has attached eviction notices to tents outside St Paul's Cathedral, telling activists to move them from the public highways by 6pm on Thursday or face legal action.

It is the latest development in a month-long saga that has pitted the protest movement Occupy London against the corporation, the local authority for the Square Mile, and St Paul's. Both institutions own the land around the church but only the corporation is pressing ahead with court proceedings.

Europe Bans X-Ray Body Scanners because they're f*cking dangerous

The European Union on Monday prohibited the use of X-ray body scanners in European airports, parting ways with the U.S. Transportation Security Administration, which has deployed hundreds of the scanners as a way to screen millions of airline passengers for explosives hidden under clothing.

The European Commission, which enforces common policies of the EU's 27 member countries, adopted the rule “in order not to risk jeopardizing citizens’ health and safety.”

Lauren Pierce, the president of the College Republicans at UT Austin: Idiot of the Day

Lauren Pierce, the president of the College Republicans at UT Austin, said on Twitter Wednesday that the idea of assassinating President Barack Obama was "tempting."

At approximately 2:30 p.m., Pierce posted, "Y'all as tempting as it may be, don't shoot Obama. We need him to go down in history as the WORST president we've EVER had! #2012."

Best bullshit:

Pierce told ABC News that the comment was a "joke" and that the "whole [shooting incident] was stupid." Giggling, she said that an attempted assassination would "only make the situation worse."

"Insofar as she's a representative [of the College Republicans], maybe it shouldn't be said, but she's made a positive statement in a way," said Cassie Wright, the group's vice president.

"I don't really see anything wrong with it," Wright added. "It's just a personal comment, not representative of any group. Just freedom of speech, you know?"

WTF? US marines to be based in Australia

The United States announced an agreement with Australia Wednesday that will expand military cooperation between the long-time allies and boost America's presence in the region...

...Under the agreement, up to 250 U.S. Marines will be sent to Darwin and the northern region of Australia for military exercises and training. Over the next several years their numbers are expected to climb to 2,500 -- a full Marine ground task force.
While U.S. officials cited the need to respond to regional natural disasters as a reason for the agreement, concern over China's military expansion is widely acknowledged as a driving factor.

David Friedman: Idiot of the Day

Fracking is Good!!!

The energy for an earthquake has to come from somewhere, and I don't think the amount of energy that goes into pumping water underground can be close to enough. What is presumably happening is that pumping in the water causes the release of energy that is already there. Dissipating that energy might mean lots of small earthquakes instead of a small number of big ones, which would probably be a net benefit.

Mr. Friedman is "academic economist who teaches at a law school and has never taken a course for credit in either field"

Clearly.

The commenters are just as deluded:

I love it. As a byproduct of pursuing ways to exploit nature on behalf of humanity, we discover that we can protect ourselves from one of nature's worst catastrophes.

Que treehuggers' heads exploding.

Making liberals unhappy outweighs earthquakes any day in their world. God help us.

My head won't explode, I'm too busy banging it on the desk.

SOPA, the Entertainment Industry's latest bid to rule the Net

Web firms including Google and Facebook have written to the US government in opposition to a proposed bill to combat piracy.

Alongside AOL, Twitter and eBay they claim that the Stop Online Privacy Act poses huge risks to the internet.

SOPA, supported by the music and film industries, aims to give new powers to content providers to help them take offending sites offline.

The US House of Representatives is due to debate the bill on 16 November.

The law would allow content owners to seek court orders to force internet service providers, search engines, payment processors and ad networks to block or cease business with websites linked to online piracy.

Rob Ford to appears as The Sugar Plum Fairy a cannon doll in ballet

FYI Your Lordship, that is sooo gay...all the drag queens in Toronto can be heard saying at once : "Whoa girl, dial it back hun"

Kain announced at a City Hall ceremony that Ford had accepted her invitation of a cameo appearance as a “cannon doll” in a performance of seasonal favourite The Nutcracker, which runs Dec. 10 to Jan. 3.

Ford, a high school football coach not known for his affinity to the arts, will wear a multi-coloured “Petrushka” costume for about two minutes onstage, said ballet spokeswoman Catherine Chang.

UK to those with private jets: Come on in! The rest of you, take off your shoes

Thousands of passengers from all over the world arriving on private jets were allowed into Britain this summer without any passport checks as a matter of official policy, according to leaked UK Border Agency emails.

The internal reports show that immigration and customs staff were instructed not to meet passengers on private charter flights, including executive jets, as part of the "light touch" targeted approach secretly adopted this summer.

The emails also reveal the extent that full passport checks on European passengers were scaled back under the "limited pilot scheme" authorised by the home secretary, Theresa May, on 28 July.

The level 2 checks, which suspended the checks on biometric passports of EU travellers, were used hundreds of times each week during the summer.

Prime Link Travel Medical Insurance = Vultures

A B.C. couple on a fixed income is facing a $50,000 US hospital bill, despite buying travel health insurance for their last trip...

...Last year, they bought full medical coverage as usual, through their broker, from Prime Link Travel Medical Insurance. While in California, Anna had to go to hospital with a blood clot in her leg.

Records show the U.S. hospital checked with Prime Link, which is underwritten by Manulife, to see if she had insurance, and was told she did. Her bill for treatment was $10,000 a day, for five days.

The couple said they were shocked when the insurance company later refused to pay the bill, because of how Anna answered one question on her initial application form.

Toronto condos badly built...well knock me over with a feather

Many of the glass condominium towers filling up the Toronto skyline will fail 15 to 25 years after they’re built, perhaps even earlier, and will need retrofits costing millions of dollars, say some industry experts.

Buyers drawn to glass-walled condos because of the price and spectacular views may soon find themselves grappling with nightmarish problems, including:

Insulation failures.
Water leaks.
Skyrocketing energy and maintenance costs.
Declining resale potential.

One developer calls glass-walled condos “throw-away buildings” because of their short lifespan relative to buildings with walls made of concrete or brick.

Good luck with that Marcus...

Oh yes, that will go a long way to build respect for Toronto...but wait, there's more!

So why the resentment? If it isn’t Toronto’s overweening power that makes people hate the city, what does? Is it because Torontonians pretend their city is the centre of the universe?

That doesn’t wash. Most Torontonians think New York is the centre of the universe *.

Four Minutes After the Big Bang

Astronomers have found pristine clouds of the primordial gas that formed in the first few minutes after the Big Bang. The composition of the gas matches theoretical predictions, providing direct evidence in support of the modern cosmological explanation for the origins of elements in the universe.

Only the lightest elements, mostly hydrogen and helium, were created in the Big Bang. Then a few hundred million years passed before clumps of this primordial gas condensed to form the first stars, where heavier elements were forged.

Attracting top employees can be difficult for cash-strapped startups. So, in many cases, they give out company stock to supplement salaries that employees might feel is below-market.

Zynga followed that strategy. But now the CityVille and FarmVille maker apparently wishes it hadn't, according to a new report.

Citing industry sources, The Wall Street Journal reported today that Zynga CEO Mark Pincus, along with his top executives, decided last year as they were preparing for an initial public offering (IPO) that they had given out too much stock to employees. But rather than accept that reality, the executives reportedly tried a different tactic: demand employees give back not-yet-vested stock or face termination.

Cain also provided one of the most striking moments when he argued in favor of the use of "enhanced interrogation" -- including the now-rejected technique of waterboarding -- in the fight against terrorism, a proposal that is likely to outrage many who thought the era of American-sponsored torture was over.

Attempting to parse his answer by suggesting that he did "not agree with torture, period," but instead supported "enhanced interrogation," Cain said he would rely on the military to decide which techniques were acceptable.

"I will trust the judgment of our military to determine what is torture and what is not torture," Cain said. Asked about waterboarding in particular, he replied, "I would return to that policy. I don't see it as torture, I see it as an enhanced interrogation technique."

Library and Archives Canada fought to keep us from knowing how shitty the RCMP behaved in the 60's

The government set the date for achieving a budget surplus during the May election campaign, but has now moved its target back a year.

A year? They'll keep pushing it back until the next election. "We'll balance it this time...promise..."

Brett Ratner out as Oscar producer

Don't worry Brett, the Oscars are for fags anyway...

This morning, Brett Ratner submitted his resignation as a producer of the 84th annual Academy Awards to Academy President Tom Sherak. Ratner then issued an open letter to the entertainment industry in which he explained his decision.

"He did the right thing for the Academy and for himself," Sherak said. "Words have meaning, and they have consequences. Brett is a good person, but his comments were unacceptable. We all hope this will be an opportunity to raise awareness about the harm that is caused by reckless and insensitive remarks, regardless of the intent."

There'll be a Facebook page in his honour in 3...2...

Mississippi votes against the pushier Christians amongst them

Mississippi voters rejected an amendment to the state constitution that would have defined life as starting at conception, and outlawed abortion and many forms of birth control if passed.

"I think voters rejected a measure they understood to be dangerous," said Felicia Brown-Williams with the Mississippi for Healthy Families Campaign. "They really tried to manipulate values around faith and family."

Harper and Co., along with B.C, don't want China to know Canada has gay people

It just brims with bigoted conservatives though.

British Columbia tourism operators marketing their products in China must avoid any promotions in that country involving gay tourism, casinos or gambling. That’s the message included in a brochure the B.C government sent to business owners starting last Thursday, entitled: How to Market Your Business to China.

“In alignment with the [Canadian Tourism Commission], Tourism BC will also require that any partner operator agrees to ... prohibit the promotion of casinos, gambling and gay tourism, per the China National Tourism Administration,” reads a passage in the 58-page brochure.

Casinos? Gambling? Harper obviously doesn't know any Asia people.

Croat shell game

A 50-year-old Croat, who had to get medical help after inserting an anti-aircraft shell in his anus, sparked a police probe and risks charges if similar weapons are found at his home, local media said on Friday.

The man was admitted to a Zagreb hospital after apparently 'experimenting in a sex game' with the explosive 2cm cannon shell which got stuck, the Slobodna Dalmacija daily reported.

Brett Ratner: Idiot of the Day

Earlier today, New York magazine’s entertainment site Vulture reported that at a Los Angeles Q&A after a screening of Tower Heist, the film’s director Brett Ratner dismissed a question about his process by saying, “Rehearsing is for fags.” Since Ratner has been signed to produce this year’s Oscars...

What follows is the now standard "apology"

“I apologize for any offense my remarks caused."

The rest is even more lame. More fitting would have been "Mea Culpa, I'm a total douche bag", but the douche bag set rarely see that in themselves.

Oh wait, there's more...

...while doing a phone interview on The Howard Stern Show, the Tower Heist helmer said he lied about having sex with actress Olivia Munn when he appeared on G4′s Attack of the Show last week. Ratner does call Munn “a friend,” and says the geek cult icon told him he is not the unnamed director she’s refers to in her book as having “undersized manhood.” Ratner continued: “She’s actually talented. The problem is I made her look like she’s a whore.”

That's nothing compared to how it made you look...

Ravers digitize their history

In an increasingly disposable world, efforts to preserve and catalogue our analogue and digital lives could change the nature of history as we know it.

In a modest house in Chicago's Bridgeport neighbourhood, an antique library filing cabinet holds hundreds of old cassette tapes. Many have handwritten labels, some two decades old.

The cabinet stores the raw analogue material for Ravearchive.com, an online project aimed at preserving and distributing the DJ mixtapes, party fliers and fanzines of the 1990s US rave scene.

Warners Brs. plans to whitewash Akira

Tuesday will be Akira's turn at bat. Warners' adaptation of the Japanese classic is looking for the actor to play Tetsuo, a young man with telekinetic abilities who becomes a dangerous weapon. (Garrett Hedlund is in negotiations to play Kaneda, the teen's older brother and leader of a motorcycle gang.) Ezra Miller, the emerging star of indie thriller We Need To Talk About Kevin, and Alden Eherenreich (who starred in Francis Ford Coppola's Tetro) are the names surfacing most often with the reading.

Hard to assign blame here. Racist Hollywood producers or their counterparts in the viewing audience.

It's a bitch to live in an age soaked in racism while it simultaneously denies anything of the kind exists.

Morons vandalize cenotaph

A cenotaph at an east Toronto high school has been vandalized just days after the completion of a restoration years in the making.

Malvern Collegiate's war service monument was wrapped in blue tape at around 12:45 a.m. Sunday, said Line Pinard, the principal of the school.

Surveillance camera footage showed four males getting out of a car just out of the range of a camera, she said.

"Evidently there was some planning in it," said Pinard. "One individual returned to the car to get the blue tape that you still see part of on the sword right now and then for a while, you can see them chatting and taking pictures before departing."

Police are investigating, but the suspects have not been identified. At least three of them appeared to be taking pictures of themselves, said Pinard.

Shot by police with rubber bullet at Occupy Oakland

While filming a police line at Occupy Oakland after midnight on Nov. 3 following the Nov. 2 general strike, an officer opens fire and shoots me with a rubber bullet. I was standing well back. There was no violence or confrontations of any kind underway. At 0:31 seconds you can see a tall officer in the front raise his weapon and then fire. This is the full clip of the incident.

Harper and Co. want to return to a more barbaric prison system

In an important article, Globe journalist Kim Mackrael recently called attention to a little-discussed amendment in the Conservative government's omnibus crime legislation. The amendment would eliminate the principle that prison guards must use the “least restrictive measures” required to control inmates.

Ms. Mackrael quoted a number of experts in corrections speaking politely about what a bad idea this would be.

To be specific, the Tories want to amend article 4(d) of the Corrections and Conditional Release Act (1992). The relevant clause establishes the principle “that the service use the least restrictive measures consistent with the protection of the public, staff members and offenders.”

Why do the Tories want to remove this principle? They have been talking to themselves about it for some time.

Hollywood's creative bankruptcy on display with 2, count 'em, 2 Snow Whites coming

The first of two live-action Snow White movies set for release next year is getting a slightly ironic title: "Mirror Mirror."

That's the name Relativity Media has picked for its comedy-action adventure starring Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen, Armie Hammer as the prince and Lily Collins as Snow White. The movie is set for release March 16.

Less than three months later, on June 1, Comcast Corp.'s Universal Pictures is set to release its action flick starring Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth in the title roles of "Snow White and the Huntsman." In Universal's version, Charlize Theron is the Evil Queen.

Although both movies make use of the fairy tale made famous by the Brothers Grimm, the studios are saying they're different enough and spaced far enough apart to both succeed.

Rupert Murdoch and Rebekah Brooks: Honor among thieves

British newspaper The Guardian is reporting that media baron Rupert Murdoch paid former News International chief Rebekah Brooks $2.7 million and the use of an office as part of her severance package.

The newspaper says without citing sources that the high-profile CEO of the now-closed tabloid News of The World was also granted continued access to her company limousine and driver for two years.

The report said Brooks was given a central London office, adding that her spokesman asked the paper not to reveal the location of the office.

The Chicago Board of Trade: Scumbags of the Day

It's probably just a group within the CBOT that have the maturity level of a 4 year old, but....

Someone at the Chicago Board of Trade issued another message to the Occupy Chicago protesters by blanketing them with these McDonald's job applications. The protesters are understandably offended by both the message and by the hundreds of pieces of new litter around them.

First the CBOT folks posted "We are the 1%" in their eighth floor windows a few weeks ago. This is the second time they tossed flyers down from their ivory tower, too. They tossed down “We Are the 1% Paying For This" on Oct. 21. They've perhaps moved the war to a second front by sending email spam to protesters.

In the words of Stephanie Tanner, "How rude!"

Oakland police beat another Iraq war veteran

A second Iraq war veteran has suffered serious injuries after clashes between police and Occupy movement protesters in Oakland.

Kayvan Sabehgi, who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, is in intensive care with a lacerated spleen. He says he was beaten by police close to the Occupy Oakland camp, but despite suffering agonising pain, did not reach hospital until 18 hours later.

Sabehgi, 32, is the second Iraq war veteran to be hospitalised following involvement in Oakland protests. Another protester, Scott Olsen, suffered a fractured skull on 25 October.

“Matt’s Safe School Law" and *religious* bullies

More so called righteous types hiding their hatred behind the Bible.

Just days after a cellphone video emerged showing a gay 15-year-old in Ohio being assaulted by another student, the Michigan Senate passed new anti-bullying legislation, but some say it actually encourages bullying to take place.

Chief among its critics is Sen. Gretchen Whitmer (D), who in a searing floor speech said that the new “Matt’s Safe School Law,” named after a Michigan teen who committed suicide after an anti-gay hazing attack, is meaningless.

Whitmer cites a special exception in the law for bullies who have “a sincerely held religious belief or moral conviction.” The law also does not address bullying against students based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

City Hall comes up with lame excuses why they think a $129 permit to pave your *own* driveway is fair

Repaving a driveway anywhere in the city of Toronto will require a $129.45 permit if a new bylaw regulating streets and sidewalks is approved by city council.

Residents in the former city of Toronto and North York already pay the fee, but the rest of the city has either been spared or, as in Etobicoke, subject to a permit only when expanding a driveway or building a new one.

Best bullshit:

The city’s transportation division argues that obtaining a paving permit gives staff a chance to inspect the property and ensure it does not conflict with trees or utilities, damage the curb or sidewalk, and conforms to the rules.

Rule 1: Pay Up.

Dumb Hacker of the Day

A French rugby fan site is back online after an apparent case of mistaken identity.

Owners of the AllezDax website said they believed a hacker had confused them with the Frankfurt stock exchange.

They said the attacker "insulted us copiously in German", having assumed the site was linked to Germany's blue-chip share index, the Dax.

Entertainment industry's latest bid to control the Net in Britain

UK arts lobby groups have demanded BT block access to the BitTorrent file sharing website, The Pirate Bay.

Music industry trade body, the BPI, said it would take legal action if the telecoms firm refused to co-operate.

The movie industry has already forced BT to block Newzbin 2, a members-only site that aggregates illegally copied material.

BT said: "We can confirm we are now in receipt of a letter from the BPI. BT is considering its response."

The telecoms operator added that a court order would be needed before any blocking could begin.
