Anderson Cooper comments on talentless hack Heidi Montag

KRS-One & Buckshot "ROBOT"

There is hope yet. Death to AutoTune.

Even God doesn't trust you Harper

Our beloved PM Stephen Harper has joined the growing number of hack politicians hiding behind God's skirts. I wonder what God's feeling on rank hypocrisy is? We mere mortals are clearer on that issue...

Stephen Harper says he's more concerned about God's judgment than how history books rate his term in office, telling a Quebec magazine in a markedly personal interview that preserving relationships with family is far more important than worrying about a political legacy.

I want simply to learn about the world and to live freely

Well I guess she learned a lesson, the world ain't free.

And a word to all the 13 year olds out there. Don't try and do anything exceptional, or you too will be put under psychiatric care.

A Dutch court has put a 13-year-old girl under state care for two months, stalling her bid to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world.

The decision by three Utrecht judges means Laura Dekker's parents, who support her plans, temporarily lose the right to make decisions about her.

A child psychologist will now assess her capacity to undertake the voyage.

Tiny ancient shells point to earliest fashion trend

Shell beads newly unearthed from four sites in Morocco confirm early humans were consistently wearing and potentially trading symbolic jewellery as early as 80,000 years ago. These beads add significantly to similar finds dating back as far as 110,000 in Algeria, Morocco, Israel and South Africa, confirming these as the oldest form of personal ornaments.

Swedish archaeologists uncover 7th century ship

Swedish archaeologists have announced the find of a 7th century burial ship, the oldest of its kind to be discovered in Scandinavia.

The ship, thought to be from the Vendel era (550-793) of Swedish prehistory, was found in Sunnerby on the island of Kållandsö in Lake Vänern in central Sweden and, according to Lake Vänern Museum, is the only known ship burial to be uncovered in Sweden.

The Toronto Music Industry Town Hall

Tonight the government held its second copyright town hall. Only it wasn't really a copyright townhall in the sense of bringing the community together to talk copyright in an open and balanced manner. Instead, the music industry stacked the room to such a degree that little else was discussed. There was the odd intervention from ACTRA, the Writers Guild, the education community, and software developers (and a self-professed pirate who may have worn a fair copyright shirt but did not discuss anything that resembled fair copyright), but the repeated music industry representation was the dominant theme of the night.

Pastor Steven Anderson: Hypocrite of the Day

Fag for GodBehold Pastor Steven Anderson, Obama and gay hating man of God.

Who is he trying to kid? Look at that picture, the picture that is setting off Gaydar alarms across the planet ("Me thinks she doth protest too much.")

As they say, the last person to know you're gay is you.

On his radio show, Alan Colmes hosted Pastor Steven Anderson, who recently gave a sermon at Faithful Word Baptist Church in which he said, "When I go to bed at night Steven L. Anderson will pray for Barack Obama to die and go to hell."

Colmes asked the pastor about his views on gays...""I believe that every homosexual in the world is a deviant, is evil, and is a predator that is out to recruit others through molestation, through rape."

Early music discovered on carving

Um, yeah ok...

Markings on a 16th Century carving from Stirling Castle could be the oldest surviving piece of written Scottish instrumental music, historians believe.

A sequence of 0s, Is and IIs have been found on one of the Stirling Heads - wooden medallions which would have decorated the castle's royal palace.

It is believed the music could have been played on instruments such as harps, viols, fiddles and lutes.

An experienced harpist has been trying to play the tune.

Fuck you Adobe

An ham fisted attempt to get us to upgrade to CS4, obscenely overpriced at $700.

Adobe announced this week that it has not tested and will not support its Creative Suite 3 line of products, including Photoshop CS3, on Apple's new Snow Leopard operating system.

John Nack, the principal product manager for Photoshop at Adobe, announced on his official blog that CS3 and earlier have not been tested on Snow Leopard. He provided a link to a compatibility document from Adobe that went even further.

"While older Adobe and Macromedia applications may install and run on Mac OS X Snow Leopard (v10.6), they were designed, tested and released to the public several years before this new operating system became available," the document states. "You may therefore experience a variety of installation, stability, and reliability issues for which there is no resolution. Older versions of our creative software will not be updated to support Mac OS X Snow Leopard (v10.6)."

Neolithic cathedral in Orkney

Article about this recent discovery, marred by a tangent into the nature of religion, and why it's not going away anytime soon.

And so it goes on – yet another spectacular archaeological find in Orkney, but this one is a real “biggie”, an astonishing discovery which is really exciting archaeologists. VisitScotland is also pretty chuffed, especially as tourism is expected to take a bit of a knock in the aftermath of the al Megrahi business.

So, what's it all about? Experts have unearthed a Neolithic “cathedral” – a massive building of a kind never before seen in Britain. It has left archaeologists stunned.

This is not like finding a couple of bits of broken pottery. This is literally groundbreaking.

At 82ft long and 65ft wide, it is placed between two of Orkney's most famous Neolithic landmarks, the Ring of Brodgar and the Stones of Stenness.

You may remember that, in one of his TV series, Billy Connolly cavorted naked around the Ring of Brodgar. Nothing quite like one ancient relic dancing around a whole lot of others.

Toronto's most evil landlord

sniffle

Toronto's Arrabiata restaurant at Yonge and Isabella is closing soon, as its evil landlord wants it for himself to open one of his awful Zelda's.

Uck.

I know at least 2 loyal Arrabiata costumers that will be boycotting any future Zelda incarnation.

Texas to make things all right

Bias in history books meant for the classroom is nothing new.

As children, we in Canada were treated to the story of the British and French "colonization" of North America, with the harmless colonists painted as nobel Christian saviors, while the evil and primitive natives had the nerve to reaction violently to our humanitarian effects to "civilize" them.

Ingrates!

If your European name ended in a vowel, you might get a footnote. Non European? Forget it.

Just the muddy history of Dollard des Ormeaux gives you a hint at how history is used by those in power to influence the present.

* the urban legend that he died by having the as yet unexploded bomb he threw at native warriors thrown back and exploding in his fort is more than likely Anglophone propaganda to make the French look bad. What hand held bombs did they have in 1660 anyway?

Texas high school students would learn about such significant individuals and milestones of conservative politics as Newt Gingrich and the rise of the Moral Majority — but nothing about liberals — under the first draft of new standards for public school history textbooks.

And the side that got left out is very unhappy.

As it stands, students would get “one-sided, right wing ideology,” said Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer, D-San Antonio, chairman of the House Mexican American Caucus.

“We ought to be focusing on historical significance and historical figures. It's important that whatever course they take, that it portray a complete view of our history and not a jaded view to suit one's partisan agenda or one's partisan philosophy,” he said.

FBI home to dangerous idiots

What planet do they spend most of their time on?

A notorious New Jersey hate blogger charged in June with threatening to kill judges and lawmakers was secretly an FBI “agent provocateur” paid to disseminate right-wing rhetoric, his attorney said Wednesday.

Hal Turner, the blogger and radio personality, remains jailed pending charges over his recent online rants, which prosecutors claim amounted to an invitation for someone to kill Connecticut lawmakers and Chicago federal appeals court judges.

But behind the scenes the reformed white supremacist was holding clandestine meetings with FBI agents who taught him how to spew hate “without crossing the line,” according to his lawyer, Michael Orozco.

Something is rotten in Harperland

We seem to be living through the worse government this country has ever seen, and after Mulroney that's quite the achievement.

The whole afraid concerning the Canadian woman Suaad Hagi Mohamud, who was detained in Kenya charged with being an impostor, keeps getting stranger.

The Canadian diplomat who officially disowned Suaad Hagi Mohamud as an "imposter" has been recalled from Kenya.

Liliane Khadour has "concluded" her posting, a consular official at the Canadian High Commission said yesterday from the capital, Nairobi.

"Her tour of duty is over," he said, explaining that Foreign Affairs employees rotate posts every two or three years, and Khadour had been in Nairobi for two. "I am not very sure where she went."

Khadour is now in Ottawa.

Although she owns a condominium apartment there with her partner, Jason Joyce, the two are staying at a downtown hotel. Both had been working at the commission in Nairobi as first secretaries.

When reached by cellphone yesterday, Joyce hung up almost immediately. Neither answered the phone in their hotel room or returned messages.

The Canada Border Services Agency has opened an internal investigation into the handling of Mohamud's case.

Had this been a white woman, the Harper government would have had her back in 24 hours, given her a ticker tape parade, and blamed the whole thing on the Liberals...

Mariah Carey' CD, now with ads for psychiatric medications and sheep

Wow, this is what it's come to. Mariah Carey's upcoming Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel will feature a 34-page mini-mag inside the CD booklet. It's being produced by Elle magazine and will feature ads from a few upscale brands. Big boss, Antonio "L.A." Reid explains the thought behind the process:

"The idea was really simple thinking: 'We sell millions of records, so you should advertise with us,' " said Antonio "L.A." Reid, IDJ's chairman.

Paramount tries to hide fact G.I. Joe is awful

If like me you’ve been both surprised and baffled by the positive early reviews G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra has received, then be baffled no more. Why all the positive buzz? It could be because Paramount is inviting only the critics most likely to praise it, to see it. At least that seems to be what’s intimated by a story being run in the LA Weekly.

The Globe and Mail jacks off publicly over Toronto

Urban porn at its most flagrant....We're world class, ohhh yeah baby..

Canada has only one really global city. In spite of the parochialism of its politicians, and woe-is-me-ism of its overtaxed, underserviced citizens, it is only Toronto that gets flagged by leading thinkers as being a contender on this score. With a metropolitan population that is poised to surpass six million by 2012, nearly half of whom will be foreign-born, Toronto is uniquely equipped for the 21st century. If it plays its cards right, its best is yet to come.

Sen. John McCain: Clueless

Arizona Sen. John McCain said today he will vote against Sonia Sotomayor, President Obama's pick to be the next U.S. Supreme Court Justice.

McCain's no vote is interesting because he holds the view that "elections have consequences" meaning a president should get his nominee approved if qualified.

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison: Idiot of the Day

Add a new item to the long list of political shenanigans that backfire once discovered. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) has decided to run for Texas governor against incumbent Rick Perry, and her new campaign website contained hidden text that read "rick perry gay." The resulting flap led to the firing of the Web development firm involved, drew heated responses from Perry's office, and (perhaps worst of all) saw Hutchison's campaign website yanked from Google's search index.
