Who's buried at Sutton Hoo?

"He must be a King."

"How can you tell?"

"He hasn't got shit all over him."

Seventy years after its discovery the debate still rages over who was buried in the mound overlooking the River Deben.

Andrew Clarke spoke to National Trust archaeologist Angus Wainwright about the most likely candidate for Sutton Hoo's most celebrated resident.

For many there is no doubt that the ship burial at Sutton Hoo is that of a king - certainly the rich treasures found in the burial chamber lend weight to this argument - but aggravatingly there is no name inscribed on any piece of jewellery, armour or drinking horn to settle the matter beyond any doubt.

As result there has thrown up an endless debate about the identity of the person buried in such splendour.

Vikings visited Canadian Arctic, research suggests

One of Canada's top Arctic archeologists says the remnants of a stone-and-sod wall unearthed on southern Baffin Island may be traces of a shelter built more than 700 years ago by Norse seafarers, a stunning find that would be just the second location in the New World with evidence of a Viking-built structure.

Bush opens his big mouth

You should have stayed quiet, people were actually beginning to respect you...ever so slightly.

Former President George W. Bush on Thursday repeated Dick Cheney's assertion that their enhanced interrogation program was legal and garnered valuable information that prevented future terrorist attacks.

In his largest domestic speech since leaving the White House in January, Bush told an audience in southwestern Michigan that after the September 11 attacks, "I vowed to take whatever steps that were necessary to protect you."

Ted Olson goes to court on behalf of gay marriage

Former Bush administration solicitor general Theodore Olson is part of a team that has filed suit in federal court in California seeking to overturn Proposition 8 and re-establish the right of same-sex couples to marry.

The suit argues that the state's marriage ban, upheld Tuesday by the California Supreme Court, violates the federal constitutional right for same-sex couples to marry. The complaint was filed Friday, and Olson and co-counsel David Boies -- who argued against Olson in the Bush v. Gore case -- will hold a news conference in Los Angeles Wednesday to explain the case. The conference will feature the two same-sex couples on whose behalf Olson filed suit.

Says Andrew Sullivan:" I'm a little discombobulated by finding myself now to the right of Olson on marriage equality."

Don't worry Andrew, changing your position depending on which way the wind blows has never been a big problem for you, has it?

Why is there buttock stabbing in Rome?

It's called the Eternal City by many, but Rome also has the sobriquet "Stab City" among football fans because of the level of knife attacks in the Italian capital.

There are fears tonight's Champions League final, being held in the city's Olympic Stadium, will be marred by such violence after several knife-related attacks on supporters from a number of English clubs over the last decade.

What is marked about the attacks is that victims are often stabbed in the buttocks. The practice even has its own slang name in the local Roman dialect - "puncicate".

Children of a stupid god

Wow.

Bigot Rights Upheld in California

Prop 8 stands. Enjoy your spiteful victory.

Yet another talentless "artist"...artist hahahaha!

If your art is bad, make it bigger. If it’s still bad, paint it red.

"Andrew, your art is really not very good. You need to push it up a notch, do something daring."

"Well, controversy sells...maybe child porn?"

"Um, that's not what I had it mind"

"Anti Catholic?

"Yawn.."

"OH! I know...!"

Some will find it shocking, macabre, echoing the worst allegations of Nazi atrocities. An American artist has spent the past 20 years making sculptures out of human skin, and is to exhibit his work in public in the UK for the first time later this year.

Welcome to the world of Andrew Krasnow, who has tackled one of the great taboos in art. Günther von Hagens may have caused controversy with his Body Worlds exhibition of human corpses, but Krasnow goes a step further.

His works include human skin lampshades – a direct response to the belief that similar items made from the skin of Holocaust victims were found at Buchenwald concentration camp.

Read more here.

Oxford University needs a new art history professor, as the present one doesn't know what he is talking about.

Martin Kemp, emeritus professor of art history at Oxford University, said Krasnow was not trying to be sensationalist. "He has not overtly pushed the sense of spectacle or sensation, unlike, say, Damien Hirst," he said. "He is working with deep and disturbing resonances. As an artist, he is pretty much out there on his own."

And "there" is not far enough. Maybe my exhibit of live pig fucking, dressed as Matisse, is passé.

325 MPs to be swept away at next election

At least half of the [British] House of Commons’ 646 MPs will be swept away at the general election, as voters take revenge on the political classes for the expenses scandal.

The departure of 325 members of parliament as a result of forced resignations, retirement and defeat at the polls would represent the biggest clear-out of parliament since 1945.

As many as 30 will be forced to resign directly because of the expenses scandal, while whips expect more than 200 to quit because they are unable to cope with continued public anger. Up to 90 MPs will be voted out in the election.

Apple changes its mind, accepts Eucalyptus app

Now let's get the developer to drop the highway robbery price of $10...

Recently, Apple rejected the iPhone app Eucalyptus entry into the company's App Store. The reason: the e-book reader, which can search the 20,000-plus item classic library of Project Gutenberg, "contains inappropriate sexual content" by allowing access to works such as The Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana.

Eucalyptus’s developer, Jamie Montgomerie, wrote about Apple’s rejection on his blog, which garnered significant coverage on the Web. On Sunday, Montgomerie wrote that he got a call from an Apple representative who discussed Eucalyptus with him and had Montgomerie resubmit the application, which is now available for purchase from the App Store for $10.

Ancient clay has internal clock

A new way of dating archaeological objects has been found, using water to unlock their "internal clocks"...

The researchers also tested a 'mystery brick', with the real age only revealed to them once they had completed their process. The known age was between 339 and 344 years - and the new technique suggested the brick was 340 years old.

Carrie Prejean: Religious airhead of the day

It's hard to be the top religious airhead, the competition is tough.

Dobson: Why did you give the answer you did with regard to the affirmation of marriage?

Prejean: . . . I felt as though Satan was trying to tempt me in asking me this question. And then God was in my head and in my heart saying, "Do not compromise this. You need to stand up for me and you need to share with all these people . . . you need to witness to them and you need to show that you're not willing to compromise that for this title of Miss USA."

Gee I wish I had imaginary friends to blame everything on too. And if we disagree with their "viewpoint", it is Satan speaking through us.

Must be nice not having to think anything through.

Christopher Hitchens: Idiot of the Day

I must say I do enjoy listening to Mr. Hitchens at times. He can be intelligent and well spoken...until now.

"The president should be squirming in his seat. Not smiling," he said. "The black dyke [Wanda Sykes for the rest of us] got it wrong. No one told her the rules."

There's a few rules he should be told as well, for example not coming across as a tiny minded bigot.

Shame.

Teressa Groenewald-Hagerman's sick view of the world

One hopes that Teressa Groenewald-Hagerman's inbox is filled with delightful reminders of what the world thinks of her.

If there is any doubt as to the dark mindset of the sport's hunter, let her own words ring out.

I dedicated this hunt to all the soldiers fighting in the middle east, and my family.

Yes, as you are so brave to hunt innocent animals. I feel safer already.

There were elephants all around us.

It's amazing how well something so big can stay hidden so well. A rather cranky cow decided to see if she could scare the elephant hunters out of us all and started to charge, but Dudley turned her with just loud yelling. She turned to run, turned to face us again, started to come and then turned and ran. Some might call it a false charge, but let me tell you when you're standing there with a bow in your hands, there's nothing false about it.

That was about all the fun we could stand for one day.

Fun...

Such chilling bravery in the face of such dangerous animals. You are such a hero!

I was completely wiped out. My legs felt a bit strange and sore as hell. I must admit after going through hell today

O you poor thing! I suppose the elephants were having a worse day, but does that matter as long as you and Dudley got to kill one?

Dumb Christians on an epic scale

U.S. Soldiers have been encouraged to spread the message of their Christian faith among Afghanistan's predominantly Muslim population, video footage obtained by Al Jazeera appears to show.

Military chaplains stationed in the U.S. air base at Bagram were also filmed with Bibles printed in the country's main Pashto and Dari languages.

In one recorded sermon, Lt. Col. Gary Hensley, the chief of the U.S. military chaplains in Afghanistan, is seen telling Soldiers that as followers of Jesus Christ, they all have a responsibility "to be witnesses for him".

"The special forces guys -- they hunt men basically. We do the same things as Christians, we hunt people for Jesus. We do, we hunt them down," he says.

"Get the hound of heaven after them, so we get them into the kingdom. That's what we do, that's our business."

I hope it's not true, or it will confirm some people are dumber than I thought possible.

Terrorism in 1776

Joe the Plumber: Ignorant Bigot of the Day

People don’t understand the dictionary—it’s called queer. Queer means strange and unusual. It’s not like a slur, like you would call a white person a honky or something like that. You know, God is pretty explicit in what we’re supposed to do—what man and woman are for. Now, at the same time, we’re supposed to love everybody and accept people, and preach against the sins. I’ve had some friends that are actually homosexual. And, I mean, they know where I stand, and they know that I wouldn’t have them anywhere near my children. But at the same time, they’re people, and they’re going to do their thing.

I think children would be better served being kept away from Joe.

Justice Scalia: Hypocrite of the Day

Justice Scalia doesn't seem to have a problem with having the privacy of others invaded, but his own...that's another matter.

He thinks it's unethical. I think he just got his ass handed to him.

"Every single datum about my life is private? That's silly," Scalia [said]...

"Justice Scalia said he doesn't care what people find out about him on the Internet," said [Professor] Reidenberg [of Fordham University] during his presentation on the transparency of personal information. "So I challenged my class to compile a dossier on him."

They did. Well! Hell hath no fury...

Condoleezza Rice lies to 4th graders

I guess there's no honor among war criminals.

Then Misha Lerner, a student from Bethesda, asked: What did Rice think about the things President Obama's administration was saying about the methods the Bush administration had used to get information from detainees?

"Let me just say that President Bush was very clear that he wanted to do everything he could to protect the country. After September 11, we wanted to protect the country," she said. "But he was also very clear that we would do nothing, nothing, that was against the law or against our obligations internationally. So the president was only willing to authorize policies that were legal in order to protect the country."

She added: "I hope you understand that it was a very difficult time. We were all so terrified of another attack on the country. September 11 was the worst day of my life in government, watching 3,000 Americans die. . . . Even under those most difficult circumstances, the president was not prepared to do something illegal, and I hope people understand that we were trying to protect the country."

Shedding light on the Catacombs of Rome

Rome's underground Christian, Jewish and pagan burial sites, the Catacombs, date back to the 2nd Century AD.

There are more than 40 of them stretching over 170km (105 miles).

But, until now, they have never been fully documented, their vast scale only recorded with handmade maps.

That is now changing, following a three-year project to create the first fully comprehensive three-dimensional image using laser scanners.
