Yes, these are child actors. Hard to tell, as everyone acts childish in the Seven Kingdoms.
HBO's latest offer is the miniseries "Game of Thrones".
Does it have all the prerequisite conditions of a modern series?
Needless violence. Check
Gratuitous nudity. Check
Incest. Check
Anachronistic swearing. Check
Children and dwarves. Check (here we get a double bonus, dwarf nudity and children saying "cunt". Ah, good times)
Lesbian scene. Check
Add to this confusing plot*, countless unpleasant characters we don't give a fuck about, and rampent misogyny and you get a ratings bonanza.
It does have some nice opening credits, without which we'd be even more confused.
* its source is a series of books, and a familiarity with said books would have helped. Apparently, all the nastiness is in the books as well.

You have a point about some of the violence in Thrones- needless gore abounds and seems almost thrown in so people know they are watching HBO and not NBC.
And admittedly- the plot does require full attention viewing to follow. But the characters anchor the plot. In my opinion, far from being characters no one cares about- they are so well drawn and the writing so good that the viewer can easily recall past plot twists by each character's role in it.
And it just has a unique look- a very well drawn fantasy world.
But - yeah- the violence may not be everyone's cup of tea.
I just finished the second book and it seems that the television show is following the story line. In a nut shell if that is the case do not even bother making a third season. After killing off almost every character that was of interest and heavily favoring the ones that are douche bags; i myself refuse to spend money on a third book. From what i have heard the good guys get it handed to them nonstop. The writer has zero loyalty to any of his main characters it is as if he get board of writing material for them and just kills them off. Kind of smart though since this way he only needs to write a bunch of short stories rather than a series of novels with a plot.
