Here's David Olive again with another hard on in print form, again defending the G20 in Toronto, because "Toronto is punching above its weight".
Yup, more "We're world class! We are, we are!" whining from the Toronto elite who so want to be loved (by a certain strata of society that is).
In many ways that people who live here don’t fully realize, Toronto punches far above its weight.
It ranks a mere 86th in population among world cities. Yet it is now included among the world’s dozen most influential centres, outranking the likes of Washington, Paris and Frankfurt in the City of London’s annual global financial centres index.
Just as the host nations for the first three G20 summits, in Washington, London and Pittsburgh, chose venues to showcase geopolitical strength and Pittsburgh’s “green-tech revolution,” Toronto is well-suited to deliberations on financial-markets reform.
The entire point of the G20 is finally to have rich and developing-world nations at the same table. Toronto is the most ethnically diverse city in the world: almost half our people are foreign-born and they speak more than 100 languages and dialects.
Too bad it's also on of the world's most ugly and poorly planned cities. But who cares, we've tarted up the place with a security fence!
