Billboards in Toronto will face a new tax starting in April, that will raise an estimated $10.4 million a year.
Funding from the new tax will enable the city to go after the owners of illegally placed billboards to have them removed.
Toronto council approved the new tax by a 25 to 16 vote, as lobbyists from the sign industry and activists who have pushed for tougher sign bylaws watched from the gallery.
But council held back from earmarking the new tax revenue to be spent on public art projects, as many of the sign bylaw advocates had requested.
Instead, the revenue will largely go into the general revenue stream, and be handed out as part of the regular budget process.
So fuck you artists, we're keeping it for ourselves..HAHAHA damn gullible hippies!
