In his post “Patterns,” Oliver Sacks wrote about the repetitive geometric nature of the visual effects experienced by some migraine sufferers — “fortification patterns,” zig-zags, swirls.

David Lewis-Williams in his book "The Mind in the Cave" also postulates that some cave paintings are representations of this phenomena.
I've always though this sfx from "Star Trek The Motion Picture", especially when moving, also gives some impression of this visual effect.
