On Thursday, a group of concerned citizens in the Church-Wellesley neighbourhood came together to discuss the recently announced proposal affecting several properties on Gloucester and Church streets. These properties include 67-69 Gloucester and 580-596 Church. The developer of the site has proposed that most or all of the existing buildings on the site be torn down and that a 25-storey condominium be put in their place. This has, unsurprisingly, upset local residents.

While cleanup crews and technical teams continue efforts to stop crude gushing into the Gulf of Mexico, Louisiana lawmakers are proposing a different approach: prayer.
State senators designated Sunday as a day for citizens to ask for God's help dealing with the oil disaster.
"Thus far efforts made by mortals to try to solve the crisis have been to no avail," state Sen. Robert Adley said in a statement released after last week's unanimous vote for the day of prayer. "It is clearly time for a miracle for us."

In what one environmentalist described as "yet another public relations disaster" for embattled energy giant BP, CEO Tony Hayward took time off Saturday to attend a glitzy yacht race around England's Isle of Wight.
As social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook lit up with outrage, BP spokespeople rushed to defend Hayward, who has drawn withering criticism as the public face of BP's halting efforts to stop the worst oil spill in U.S. history.
Spokeswoman Sheila Williams said Hayward took a break from overseeing BP efforts to stem the undersea gusher in Gulf of Mexico so he could watch his boat "Bob" participate in the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race. The 52-foot yacht is made by the Annapolis, Maryland-based boatbuilder Farr Yacht Design.
Guess he got his life back.

Radiocarbon dating verifies ancient Egypt's history
Experts have used scientific dating techniques to verify the historical chronology of ancient Egypt.
Radiocarbon dating was used to show that the chronology of Egypt's Old, Middle and New Kingdoms is indeed accurate.
The researchers dated seeds found in pharaohs' tombs, including some from the tomb of the King Tutankhamun.
They write in the journal Science that some of the samples are more than 4,500 years old.

A Vancouver Island board of education has decided to reprint a middle-school's yearbooks after a teacher took scissors to 150 copies last week and clipped out the photo of a Grade 10 student because of comments he made about the school principal.
Comox Valley board chair Susan Barr told the Vancouver Sun the decision to reprint the yearbook was made after a public outcry that included hate mail sent to principal Lori Carpenter, even though she had not been involved in the decision to remove Brandon Armstrong's picture.
Barr said she does not know what it will cost to reprint the yearbook, but there will be no charge for students.
"It is a cost the district will gladly bear," she said. "We want to put things right."
Teacher Ken Piercy, who was in charge of the yearbook committee, cut out Brandon's photo and comment because he said the boy had falsely accused the principal of spending money on a fence instead of textbooks.
"I will not allow anything to be published that is hurtful and untrue," Piercy stated in an insert placed in the defaced yearbooks.

German cathedral bones 'are Saxon queen Eadgyth'
Scientists have revealed that they think bones found in a German cathedral are those of one of the earliest members of the English royal family.
The remains of Queen Eadgyth, who died in 946, were excavated in Magdeburg Cathedral in 2008.
The granddaughter of Alfred the Great, King of Wessex, the Saxon princess married Otto I, Holy Roman Emperor, in 929.
The findings are due to be presented at the University of Bristol later.
A spokesman from the university said the bones were the oldest surviving remains of an English royal burial.

Tuesday night's speech from the Oval Office of the White House was written to a 9.8 grade level, said Paul J.J. Payack, president of Global Language Monitor. The Austin, Texas-based company analyzes and catalogues trends in word usage and word choice and their impact on culture.
Though the president used slightly less than four sentences per paragraph, his 19.8 words per sentence "added some difficulty for his target audience," Payack said.

A “Northern Ontario oasis,” including the fake lake with docks, a canoe sculpture and Muskoka chairs; a stylized “bridge” in the middle; and at the other end, a “cityscape” of boxy urban towers suspended in the air.
Taking a political beating for spending millions on a fake lake, the Prime Minister’s Office organized a press briefing to insist it was more, and worth every penny. The project, PMO officials said, will send 3,000 journalists home with a better impression of Canada.

'Roman gladiators' link to York skeleton find
The mystery of 1,800-year-old remains unearthed in York may have been solved thanks to bite and hammer marks on their decapitated skulls.
Archaeologists have exhumed 80 skeletons from gardens at Driffield Terrace over the past decade.
The results of forensic work on the skeletons suggests they may be part of the world's only well-preserved Roman gladiator cemetery.
Marks on the remains suggest some individuals died in a violent manner.

Racists in (shock) Arizona stuck with gallons of unused white paint

Some La Quinta High School students: Idiots of the Day
Seven seniors at a Southern California high school were facing disciplinary action for participating in a game called "Beat the Jew" in which losers were subjected to "incineration" or "enslavement," a school administrator said Friday.
The game involved some students playing the role of Nazis who blindfolded and dropped off other students playing Jews who must find their way back to the campus, said Sherry Johnstone, assistant superintendent of personnel for Desert Sands Unified School District.

Neanderthals living in Britain 40,000 years earlier than thought
Francis Wenban-Smith from the University of Southampton discovered two ancient flint hand tools used to cut meat at the M25/A2 road junction at Dartford, Kent, during an excavation funded by the Highways Agency.
Tests on sediment burying the flints showed they date from around 100,000 years ago - proving Neanderthals were living in Britain at this time.
The country was previously assumed to have been uninhabited during this period.

Minister for Communications Stephen Conroy has vowed to push on with his controversial internet filtering scheme, despite a barrage of criticism.
Senator Conroy told The Sun-Herald that internet advocacy groups such as GetUp! were ''deliberately misleading'' the Australian public about the scheme, which will refuse classification to illegal and socially unacceptable web pages. The legislation, which was expected to be passed before Parliament rises in June, has been delayed until the second half of the year while the government fine-tunes it.
The government's $128.8 million Cyber Safety policy includes forcing internet service providers to block access to a secret blacklist of website pages identified as ''refused classification'' by Australian government bureaucrats.

Harper and friends blame "liberals" for 1 f*cking billion dollar G20 bill
Trying to deflect blame (something conservatives love to do) for the 1 billion dollar G20 bill, we get this little gem:
As the public outcry grows against the huge cost for the three-day meeting, Public Safety Minister Vic Toews told CTV’s Question Period yesterday that using the military – which would have been a much cheaper option than the RCMP – would have provoked political outrage from the Liberals.
“You know, of course, what the opposition parties would say, the Liberals, they would say the army in streets with guns,” said Mr. Toews.
In part says Mr. Toews decisions around security were “political decisions.”

BBC is airing The Doha Debates:
The Doha Debates are chaired by the award-winning former BBC correspondent and interviewer Tim Sebastian, who founded them in 2004 and secured their editorial independence.
Although the Debates are financed by the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, no government, official body or broadcaster has any control over what is said at the sessions or who is invited.
Televised eight times a year by BBC World News, the Debates are based on a centuries-old format, refined by the famous Oxford Union. They focus on a single, controversial motion, with two speakers for and against. Once they have outlined their arguments, each speaker is questioned by the chairman and the discussion is then opened up to the audience for argument and a final electronic vote.
The 350-strong audiences are drawn mainly from Qatar’s student body and come from all over the Arab and Islamic worlds. In several debates they have adopted radical and unexpected positions.

England finds yet another sleazy way to fingerprint children
Students in Manchester are having their thumbprints digitally transformed into electronic codes, which can then be recognised by a computer program.
Under the scheme, pupils swipe a bar code inside the book they want borrow then press their thumb on to a scanner to authorise the loan. Books are returned in the same way.

Malawi does the right thing
Mr wa Mutharika had been under international pressure to reconsider the convictions of Steven Monjeza, 26, and Tiwonge Chimbalanga, 20. They were arrested in December after they were united in a traditional wedding ceremony in the conservative southern African country, where homosexuality is illegal.
Mr. Mutharika isn't happy about it, but who fucking cares, they're free.

Toronto police have purchased four, long-range acoustic devices (LRAD) — often referred to as sound guns or sound cannons — for the upcoming June 26-27 summit, the Star has learned.
Purchased this month, the LRADs will become a permanent fixture in Toronto law enforcement, said police spokesperson Const. Wendy Drummond.
Boy, bet there's a lot of police having orgasms today over that bit of news.

the devices will primarily be used by police as a “communication tool.” The devices double as loudspeakers and can blast booming, directional messages or emergency notifications in 50 different languages

Walmart in Wichita, Kansas: Idiots of the Day
Heather Ravenstein tried to save Wal-Mart some money Friday by foiling a shoplifter's plan to steal a $600 computer, but it cost her her job...
...The next day, about two hours before her shift was over, Ravenstein says an assistant manager asked to speak with her. He then told her it's against Wal-Mart policy for anyone but a manager or someone in asset protection to try to stop a customer from stealing.
"He said there's really no gray area," Ravenstein says. "It just goes straight to termination."
She was told to turn in her badges and keys.
"I was in shock at first," Ravenstein says. "I didn't think anything like this would happen."

The General Teaching Council (GTC) had heard Adam Walker used a school laptop during lessons in County Durham to post the descriptions.
Mr Walker, from Spennymoor, said he had been singled out because of his views.
The GTC said it was "troubled" by some postings, but was not satisifed the views were "suggestive of intolerance".

The country's biggest net firm Eircom has begun sending letters to those identified as illegal file-sharers.
It is the first nation to implement such a system. France is also planning to introduce a similar policy.

Kilts, Mr. Jacobs was told, do not fit the dress code for graduation – although he would be allowed to wear it during a post-convocation dinner. The face of a homophobic scumbag in Windsor Ontario
A gay rights activist and director of a one-act play in Windsor about tolerance is recovering from a savage beating that he says exposes a hateful act of homophobia.
Chris Rabideau, 26, said he was robbed and then beaten by two men who told him the attack early Friday was justified because he's gay.
He said the incident began after one man approached him outside a convenience store at Ouellette Way and Giles Boulevard. When he reached the corner of Ouellette and Erie Street, another man joined the first suspect.
A police report said they took Rabideau's wallet and tried to force him to go to a bank machine to withdraw money. He instead ran to his apartment lobby, where they caught up to him.
Chris Rabideau said the suspects beat him in the lobby of his apartment building and used anti-gay slurs. He said they determined he was gay from his demeanor and became very angry when he told them they were on video. (CBC)
During the incident, the men denigrated Rabideau, referring to him with slurs commonly used in gay bashing.
"I think it was drug-related, I think they wanted money. It became a hate crime because they started calling me 'faggot', 'homo' and everything in between," Rabideau said. "They said now that you're gay, this gives us more reason to do what we're doing."

Toronto police shut down scummy movers scam
Desi Movers and its 18 aliases are currently out of business.
Their trucks have been impounded, their offices raided and their owners arrested...
...In its investigation, the Star found more than 30 people alleged they were taken advantage of by the movers.
The Star also discovered that the company changed its name in order to distance itself from the complaints. But with every new name came new complaints and they all sounded the same.
The movers would quote a very low cost to clients who responded to their ads in local newspapers or on the internet.
The company would ask for a deposit up front, then, halfway through the job, it was alleged would double or even triple the costs. If a client refused to pay the increase, the company would allegedly threaten to hold their belongings in a company storage locker.
One client, Chris Brown, was told it would cost $500 to move 200 metres from one Port Credit apartment to the other. But once the truck was loaded the price jumped to $1,500.

Pennsylvania's poor delicate flower Tom Corbett doesn't like being criticized on Twitter
Tom Corbett, current Attorney General of the state of Pennsylvania and Gubernatorial Candidate, has subpoenaed Twitter to appear as a Grand Jury witness to “testify and give evidence regarding alleged violations of the laws of Pennsylvania”.
The subpoena orders Twitter to provide “any and all subscriber information” of the person(s) behind two accounts – @bfbarbie and @CasaBlancaPA – who have been anonymously criticizing the man on the popular micro-sharing service.
According to the subpoena (embedded below), the information that Twitter is ordered to provide includes “name, address, contact information, creation date, creation Internet Protocol address and any and all log in Internet Protocol address”.

The subpoena orders Twitter to provide “any and all subscriber information” of the person(s) behind two accounts – @bfbarbie and @CasaBlancaPA – who have been anonymously criticizing the man on the popular micro-sharing service.
According to the subpoena (embedded below), the information that Twitter is ordered to provide includes “name, address, contact information, creation date, creation Internet Protocol address and any and all log in Internet Protocol address”.

Pakistan sticks figures in ears, goes LALALALALA
Pakistan has blocked the popular video sharing website YouTube because of its "growing sacrilegious content".
Access to the social network Facebook has also been barred as part of a crackdown on websites seen to be hosting un-Islamic content.
On Wednesday a Pakistani court ordered Facebook to be blocked because of a page inviting people to draw caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad.
Some Wikipedia pages are also now being restricted, latest reports say.

The Ontario Municipal Board approved a controversial plan Wednesday to build a pair of condo towers that will be visible above the Ontario Legislative Assembly when seen from University Avenue south of College Street.
Board member S. J. Stefanko ruled that high-rises proposed for the Four Seasons Hotel property at 21 Avenue Road are “consistent” with provincial and city planning policies, and rejected arguments that the project will undermine the “postcard” views of the legislature.
The application, from Menkes Developments, had been opposed by the Office of the Speaker of the House, representing the Ontario Legislative Assembly.
Characterizing the decision as “unbelievably disappointing,” heritage expert Catherine Nasmith, former president of the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario, predicts the project will set a precedent for other properties on Avenue Road just north of Bloor. “We’re gradually going to have no sky behind Queen’s Park,” she said.

Apple doesn't accept cash for the iPad?

Diane Campbell saved up, bit by bit, the $600 required to buy an Apple iPad, but when she showed up at the store with a wad of cash to buy the tablet, she found she was out of luck.
Campbell recalls her visit to the Palo Alto Apple Store: "I had my cash in the backpack and I went up proudly to the counter and told them, 'I would like to purchase an iPad.'"
Apple's sales policy states that the iPad must be purchased by credit or debit card, according to ABC News. No plastic means no tablet, and the Apple employee turned Campbell away.
"They said, 'Sorry, we don't take cash.' And, so I looked at her and I said OK she's kidding," Campbell tells ABC News.

Said Magistrate Nyakwawa Usiwa Usiwa, “The state has proven beyond reasonable doubt that these gentlemen had sex despite them being male, which is against the law of Malawi.” The couple will be sentenced on Thursday, May 20. They face up to fourteen years imprisonment with hard labor. Lawyers hope to reverse the decision at High Court.

A Jefferson County teacher picked the wrong example when he used assassinating President Bar ack Obama as a way to teach angles to his geome try students.
Someone alerted authorities and the Corner High School math teacher was questioned by the Secret Service, but was not taken into custody or charged with any crime.
To bad rampant idiocy isn't a crime.
The teacher was appar ently teaching his geometry students about parallel lines and angles, officials said. He used the example of where to stand and aim if shooting Obama.
"He was talking about angles and said, 'If you're in this building, you would need to take this angle to shoot the president,' " said Joseph Brown, a senior in the geometry class.
The idiocy isn't only confined to this teacher...
Caroline Polk, the parent of a ninth-grader at the school, said she doesn't believe the teacher ought to be fired.
"We all make mistakes, and we should be able to learn from our mistakes," she said. "What he said was just wrong and inappropri ate. Everyone's got their own opinions, but we have to be aware of our sur roundings. At this point, it just needs to be handled in a way that it won't be repeated."

A brain dead group of protesters commits an act that can only be called terrorism, and they think this will help their cause?
An explosive fire at a Royal Bank in Ottawa early Tuesday was a deliberate act of protest against corporate "Kanada," a video posted online claims.
The video shows the RBC branch at Bank Street and First Avenue at night. It lights up suddenly, and flames spill out the front of the building. Two people can be seen walking casually out and heading offscreen toward the left.
The screen goes dark, and a written statement scrolls up the screen as it is read aloud by a computerized voice. It states that RBC was a major sponsor of the 2010 Olympics on "stolen indigenous land."
"The Games in Vancouver are now over, but resistance continues," said the statement. "An RBC branch can be found in every corner of Kanada."
The statement, signed by "FFFC - Ottawa," also says the group will be at the G20 summit in Toronto June 26-27 and at the G8 Summit near Huntsville, Ont., June 25-26.
The video and statement were posted under the title "Direct Action in Ottawa" on the website of the Ottawa Independent Media Centre by someone named GracB on Tuesday afternoon.
FYI you cretins, your actions are setting back the legitimate avenues of protest and giving President Harper more reason to act like the prick that he is.

Google f*cks up big time
In a blog post published Friday, Google admitted to 'mistakenly' collecting sensitive private data sent over WiFi networks.
Germany's data protection authority (DPA) requested Google audit the WiFi data collected by its Street View cars. The audit revealed that contrary to the company's claims, for at least three years, Google has been collecting payload data (the information users send over a wireless network) from non-password-protected WiFi networks. A programming error from 2006 was at fault.
I call bullshit.
Explaining how this collection of sensitive data occurred, Google's Senior VP of Engineering & Research Alan Eustace said, "Quite simply, it was a mistake." He explained, "An engineer working on an experimental WiFi project wrote a piece of code that sampled all categories of publicly broadcast WiFi data. A year later, when our mobile team started a project to collect basic WiFi network data like SSID information and MAC addresses using Google’s Street View cars, they included that code in their software—although the project leaders did not want, and had no intention of using, payload data."
Google outlined the steps it plans to take as a result of the mistake. The company says it intends to delete the data "as quickly as possible."

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key was facing heavy criticism Thursday after making a cannibalistic comment about a Maori tribe for the second time in a week...
...On Tuesday, during a dinner meeting with another Maori tribe, the Ngati Porou, Key said he was glad he was with them instead of with the Tuhoe, who would have made him the main course. He repeated the remark as a joke during a meeting with tourism officials in Auckland on Thursday.
"The good news is that I was having dinner with Ngati Porou as opposed to their neighbouring iwi, which is Tuhoe, in which case I would have been dinner, which wouldn't have been quite so attractive," Key was quoted as saying.

“I think God’s law has to be spoken about,” Mr. Mammoliti said. “Those of us that believe in God know that there are certain days that we’re not supposed to be working and we are supposed to be with our families.”
Mr. Mammoliti, a practising Catholic, tried to exempt Christmas, Good Friday and Easter from a proposal that would have allowed all Toronto retailers to open 365 days a year. His attempt to single out Christian holidays sparked a debate about how to respect religion in one of the world’s most multicultural cities.
“Why are you not including Canada Day?” Councillor Raymond Cho, also a Christian, asked. “[Are you] working for only Christians when you become mayor?”

One School Committee member, saying she's "appalled" by the behavior of some of the Republicans who used a room at King Middle School last weekend, wants to protect the city's public schools from future harm...
...The Republican State Convention was held at the Portland Exposition Building, which is on Park Avenue, near the middle school. Party members from Knox County caucused in a classroom used by eighth-grade social studies teacher Paul Clifford.
When Clifford returned to school on Monday, he found that a favorite poster about the U.S. labor movement had been taken and replaced with a bumper sticker that read, "Working People Vote Republican."
Later, Clifford learned that his classroom had been searched. Republicans who had attended the convention called Principal Mike McCarthy to complain about "anti-American" things they saw there, including a closed box containing copies of the U.S. Constitution that were published by the American Civil Liberties Union.

St. Paul Elementary School in Hinghamm, Mass: It's God's will we act like total c*nts
A Roman Catholic school in Massachusetts has withdrawn its acceptance of an 8-year-old boy with lesbian parents, saying their relationship was "in discord" with church teachings, according to one of the boys' mothers.
It's at least the second time in recent months that students have not been allowed to attend a U.S. Catholic school because of their parents' sexual orientation, with the other instance occurring in Colorado.
The Massachusetts woman, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of concerns about the effect of publicity on her son, said she planned to send the boy to third grade at St. Paul Elementary School in Hingham in the fall. But she said she learned her son's acceptance was rescinded during a conference call Monday with Principal Cynthia Duggan and the parish priest, the Rev. James Rafferty.
"I'm accustomed to discrimination, I suppose, at my age and my experience as a gay woman," the mother said. "But I didn't expect it against my child."

Philip Collopy (29) fatally shot himself in front of a number of teenagers, including a youth who was on temporary release from a juvenile detention centre, an inquest was told yesterday.
The hearing at Limerick Coroner's Court was also told that moments before Collopy pointed the gun at his head, the well-known criminal said: "There is nothing in it, watch."

Arizona gets even more vile
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has signed a bill targeting a school district's ethnic studies program, hours after a report by United Nations human rights experts condemned the measure.
State schools chief Tom Horne, who has pushed the bill for years, said he believes the Tucson school district's Mexican-American studies program teaches Latino students that they are oppressed by white people.
Public schools should not be encouraging students to resent a particular race, he said.
"It's just like the old South, and it's long past time that we prohibited it," Horne said.

Free speech under attack in Sweden
More religious thugs using force to silence those they don't agree with.
Lars Vilks, a Swedish cartoonist whose sketch of the Prophet Muhammad enraged many Muslims, was head-butted today while giving a lecture about freedom of speech.
Vilks, who depicted the Prophet Muhammad with the body of a dog in 2007, said he was assaulted by a man sitting on the front row as he spoke at the University of Uppsala, about 70 kilometers from Stockholm.
A spokesman for the Uppsala police said about 20 people tried to attack Vilks after interrupting his lecture, adding that the police had to intervene to stop them. Two people were detained.
Vilks was not immediately available to comment further. He says he has received death threats since his Prophet sketch.

WRITE-before-you-think microblogging site Twitter produced another media scandal yesterday when Fairfax columnist Miranda Devine levelled what some interpreted as a homophobic slur.
Devine, who tweets as @mirandadevine, got involved in an online altercation with another Twitter user over her weekend newspaper column, which took as its topic the sacking of fellow Fairfax columnist Catherine Deveny.
Tweeter @justinbarbour said to Devine: "You've had enough of attacking the gays for now i see. great thanks."
Devine fired back: "You've had enough of rogering gerbils I see. great. thanks."
Devine subsequently deleted her "gerbils" tweet, causing @justinbarbour to promptly post a screenshot of it on Twitter.
It started a storm of comment, users creating a separate topic name "rogeringgerbils".

Sen. Joe Lieberman's citizenship-stripping bill
A revolting new bill is being tabled in the U.S.
By now you've heard that Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) is proposing a new law that could potentially strip Americans of their citizenship if they're involved with foreign terrorist organizations.
Two things you should know about this: First, it isn't just some paranoid liberal nightmare. It's actually moving forward. Lieberman is going to hold a presser tomorrow to introduce the bill, I'm told, along with Rep. Jason Altmire of Pennsylvania. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has already signaled he could support this.
Second, Lieberman's office has clarified to me how the law would work: It would empower the State Department to conclude -- on its own -- that Americans are conspiring with terror groups and should be stripped of their citizenship.

Gives new meaning to the phrase "I can't lift luggage. That's why I hired him."
On April 13, the "rent boy" (whom we'll call Lucien) arrived at Miami International Airport on Iberian Airlines Flight 6123, after a ten-day, fully subsidized trip to Europe. He was soon followed out of customs by an old man with an atavistic mustache and a desperate blond comb-over, pushing an overburdened baggage cart.
That man was George Alan Rekers, of North Miami — the callboy's client and, as it happens, one of America's most prominent anti-gay activists. Rekers, a Baptist minister who is a leading scholar for the Christian right, left the terminal with his gay escort, looking a bit discomfited when a picture of the two was snapped with a hot-pink digital camera.
Who ever would have guessed these tired old closeted queens would be the greatest obstacle in the way to equality?

Sen. Mike Bennett of Florida: Idiot of the Day
I didn't expect Sen Mike Bennett, R-Bradenton, to like the fact that I reported on what I saw in plain view on the Senate floor last Thursday.
But within about an hour after publishing my story about the pornographic image we caught with our cameras on his computer, I got a threatening phone call from the senator blasting me for publishing his story.
"What kind of man are you?" he asked, then ascribed other attributes to my character such as "pathetic" and "voyeuristic".
"What kind of man sneaks over people's shoulders like that?" Bennett questioned.

Aid experts alarmed by Canada’s new anti-abortion stand in foreign policy have been advised to “shut the f--- up” or risk Prime Minister Stephen Harper taking even more harsh measures – abroad, or maybe even at home if abortion becomes an election issue.
“We’ve got five weeks or whatever left until G-8 starts. Shut the f--- up on this issue,” Conservative Senator Nancy Ruth told a group of international-development advocates who gathered on Parliament Hill on Monday to sound the alarm about Canada’s hard-right stand against abortion in foreign aid.
“If you push it, there will be more backlash,” Ruth said. “This is now a political football. This is not about women’s health in this country.”

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli: Idiot of the Day
Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli apparently isn’t fond of wardrobe malfunctions, even when Virginia’s state seal is involved.
The seal depicts the Roman goddess Virtus, or virtue, wearing a blue tunic draped over one shoulder, her left breast exposed. But on the new lapel pins Cuccinelli recently handed out to his staff, Virtus’ bosom is covered by an armored breastplate.
When the new design came up at a staff meeting, workers in attendance said Cuccinelli joked that it converts a risqué image into a PG one.
The joke might be on him, said University of Virginia political scientist Larry Sabato.
“When you ask to be ridiculed, it usually happens. And it will happen here, nationally,” he said. “This is classical art, for goodness’ sake.”
