FTC gives Facebook a slap on the wrist over its mountain of bullsh*t
Facebook has agreed to tighten privacy controls as part of a settlement with US regulators over abuse of user data.
The Federal Trade Commission said Facebook would tighten consent rules on privacy, and close access to deleted accounts in 30 days or less.
The case began in 2009, when Facebook changed settings to make public details users may have deemed private.
Best bullshit:
In a blog post, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said the company had made a "bunch of mistakes".
In his mind, mistake #1: getting caught.
Facebook did not admit guilt and was not fined, but it was barred from "making any further deceptive privacy claims" and will undergo regular checks on privacy practices, the FTC said.
"The proposed settlement requires Facebook to take several steps to make sure it lives up to its promises," the FTC said in a statement.

Some students at Keller High School in Texas are clueless on the concept of hate
Students at Keller High School say a Facebook page called "Abolish the GSA, Gay-Straight Alliance, at Keller High School" went up about a week ago. But it will soon be a part of the past.
While the person or persons who started it posted on the page that it is "not intend[ed] to be a hate group," it has certainly sparked controversy.
Oh you little angels, what did you intend?
many students said because of their Christianity, there should also be a "Straight Club" — another Facebook page that developed on this issue.
Mathew Murphy, a 15-year-old who spoke to News 8, didn't start the Straight Club page, but he supports what's on it.
"I think I'm standing up for my rights; if they want to call me a 'gay-basher,' you can call me a 'gay-basher,'" Murphy said. "But I just don't think it's right to be a homosexual."
And I don't think it's right to hide your hate behind a Bible, and call it a "right". Are we even?

The number of Facebook friends that people have may be related to the size of brain regions involved in social interaction, research suggests.
In a study published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B Biological Sciences, scientists looked at brain scans of 125 university students in London who were all active Facebook users and counted the number of friends each had on the social network and in real life.

Facebook "fixes" issue after they've been caught
Facebook has said that it has "fixed" cookies that could have tracked users after they logged out of the site.
The issue was brought to light by an Australian blogger who has conducted a year-long analysis of the social network's use of cookies.
He concluded the company might still be able to track members' web browsing after they logged out, albeit only on websites that integrate with Facebook...
...The blogger who first highlighted the issue, Nik Cubrilovic, wrote about the issues in detail on his blog on Sunday.
He said that he had informed Facebook about the issue a year ago but there was no response from the firm until his blog post was widely reported across the net.
In an update to his blog Mr Cubrilovic acknowledged the changes that Facebook had made.

A 1988 video rental privacy law is keeping Netflix’s U.S. users from sharing what they’re watching on Facebook.

North Carolina to allow bigoted vote on citizen's rights
Letting people vote on the rights of others is a really bad idea, but bigots *love* it. Let's them feel like they are being democratic while simultaneity kicking those they don't like in the teeth.

...North Carolina is the only state in the Southeast that has yet to ban gay marriage in its constitution. This week, the state’s Republican-led general assembly will debate a 2012 ballot initiative to extend a law defining marriage as between a man and women to the state constitution.

Facebook has apologised for the way it rolled-out a new system that recognises users' faces.
The social network said that it should have done more to notify members about the global launch.
Its Tag Suggestions feature scans photos and automatically picks out existing friends.
Although users have the option to switch it off, some complained that they were not explicitly asked if they wanted it activated

Mark Zuckerberg keeps getting stranger and stranger
When he's not too busy connecting people across the universe, Mark Zuckerberg is pursuing a new "personal challenge," as he calls it. "The only meat I'm eating is from animals I've killed myself," says the Facebook founder and CEO.
It's an odd dietary direction for the 27-year-old Internet billionaire, but since he has taken to killing goats, pigs and chickens, "I'm eating a lot healthier foods. And I've learned a lot about sustainable farming and raising of animals," he says. "It's easy to take the food we eat for granted when we can eat good things every day."
Zuckerberg's new goal came to light, not surprisingly, on Facebook. On May 4, Zuckerberg posted a note to the 847 friends on his private page: "I just killed a pig and a goat."

Mark Zuckerberg pushes to make Facebook just that much creepier
Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg says he wants the social networking site to let children under the age of 13 use it.
At the moment that age limit is dictated by the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act which was made Federal Law in America in 1998.
But Zuckerberg says he's willing to fight to change the law.
He says it's a battle worth taking on because of the educational benefits of using the site.

Facebook lets homophobic bigots call the shots

Richard Metzger of Dangerous Minds (you may know him as founder of Disinformation, or as a BB guestblogger, or as the counterculture "Charlie Rose"), writes in with the odd story of a Facebook photo ban, and the media misinfo frenzy that followed.
Since just last Friday, the above photo, a publicity still from the popular BBC soap opera "EastEnders" has become the emblem of an utterly unnecessary Facebook scandal. One that's already gone international and one that I, personally, I am tangentially involved in. I say unnecessary because it never should have happened in the first place, but let me state this at the beginning of this for those of you--you know who you are-- who'll just read the first two paragraphs before zipping off to write something snarky in the comments: I do not personally believe that the Facebook corporation is in any way homophobic. Not even in the slightest. Okay?
Now that I've got that out of the way, here is what happened and why some people might think that they are:

Zuckerberg continues campaign to turn under 30's into illiterates
America's favorite boy genius, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, has announced a new form of messaging. E-mail, the last Internet link to traditional, epistolary, interpersonal communication, is, he said, outmoded. Young people, by which he meant younger than his own 26 years, desired something more nimble for their iPads, mobile phones and other devices. What he proposed was a "social inbox" where users could readily access messages from friends and then sort them — sort of a cross between instant messaging and Twitter.
Not all is lost though:

The people behind the "Just Say Now" marijuana legalization campaign (oft-Boinged Salon contributor Glenn Greenwald is one of many political thinkers on their board) want Facebook to back off its decision to pull their ads from the social networking service...
...They report that Facebook's communications rep Adam Noyes said, when asked for Facebook's decision in writing:
It would be fine to note that you were informed by Facebook that the image in question was no long acceptable for use in Facebook ads. The image of a pot leaf is classified with all smoking products and therefore is not acceptable under our policies. Let me know if you need anything further.
That's world class bullshit, but we expect nothing less from Facebook.

Facebook Places: Stalker's Delight
I can't put my finger on it, but this new Facebook Places feature has "creepy" written all over it. Guess I come from a lost age where privacy actually meant something.
Social-networking giant Facebook has entered the check-in world.
Facebook executives on Wednesday announced the launch of Facebook Places, which -- similar to services such as Foursquare and Gowalla -- will allow people to use the GPS on their mobile phones to let friends know exactly where they are.
And here I thought FB couldn't get more narcissistic.
Facebook staff also said the feature will be useful not only to let friends know where they are, but also to learn if their friends are nearby at the same time, and to write down what they are doing at the location and what they think about it -- creating a trail allowing friends to see what the writer did there days or even years ago.

Facebook holds emergency meeting on how to f*ck over its users
Facing increasing pressure from the media and users, Facebook has called an all hands meeting tomorrow afternoon, at 4 PM Pacific, to discuss the company’s overall privacy strategy according to sources inside the company. Facebook has come under increasing scrutiny for a number of reasons and many were left with a sour taste in their mouth following a New York Times reader Q&A with Elliot Schrage, the company’s Vice President for Public Policy.

Facebook's "Instant Personalization"
Just an FYI to all Facebook users.
"As of today, there is a new privacy setting called "Instant Personalization" that shares data with non-facebook websites and it is automatically set to "Allow." Go to Account > Privacy Settings > Applications and Websites and uncheck "Allow"
Up to you really, too bad Facebook didn't think so.
They ain't going to make it easy either...
Please keep in mind that if you opt out, your friends may still share public Facebook information about you to personalize their experience on these partner sites unless you block the application.

The origins of Facebook have been in dispute since the very week a 19-year-old Mark Zuckerberg launched the site as a Harvard sophomore on February 4, 2004.
Then called "thefacebook.com," the site was an instant hit. Now, six years later, the site has become one of the biggest web sites in the world, visited by 400 million people a month.
The controversy surrounding Facebook began quickly. A week after he launched the site in 2004, Mark was accused by three Harvard seniors of having stolen the idea from them.
This allegation soon bloomed into a full-fledged lawsuit, as a competing company founded by the Harvard seniors sued Mark and Facebook for theft and fraud, starting a legal odyssey that continues to this day.
