In a nutshell for our non Canadian readers, our communication regulatory government agency, always to be relied upon to take the business side over consumers, ruled it was AOK for internet providers to cap usage and charge for it.
Just a little message to Bell, Rogers and their ilk. You are despised.
The federal government will decide by March 1 whether to reject a CRTC decision on usage-based internet billing, after Prime Minister Stephen Harper requested a review.
Harper's communications director, Dimitri Soudas, confirmed the review Tuesday, saying the government was "very concerned" about the impact of the CRTC ruling on consumers.
Industry Minister Tony Clement said the government would decide by March 1 whether to accept the decision, send it back for review, or reject it.
"This is a very important issue for consumers, for small business, and for innovators," Clement said following a cabinet meeting in Ottawa.

Federal Industry Minister Tony Clement is defending his "principled" decision to reject BHP Billiton's $40-billion US hostile takeover bid for Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan.
"It's a decision that I think is in the interests of Canada and Canadians," the minister told CBC News on Thursday outside the House of Commons in Ottawa. "That's my position."
It comes as the federal opposition parties, who are against the bid, accused Clement of leaving the door open for BHP to gain control of what they insist is a vital "strategic national resource."
My prediction: it will go thru. A conservative weights a choice: national sovereignty vs. money.....

The PR bullshit spin continues on the fake lake..
The installation is in three parts, symbolizing the two summits: the G8 in Muskoka and the G20 in Toronto. A “Northern Ontario oasis,” including the fake lake with docks, a canoe sculpture and Muskoka chairs; a stylized “bridge” in the middle; and at the other end, a “cityscape” of boxy urban towers suspended in the air.
Taking a political beating for spending millions on a fake lake, the Prime Minister’s Office organized a press briefing to insist it was more, and worth every penny. The project, PMO officials said, will send 3,000 journalists home with a better impression of Canada.

A fake $2 million indoor lake by the Gardiner Expressway is the latest example of the Conservative government’s summit spending spree that some say could hit $2 billion by the time world leaders fly out of Toronto on June 27.
Dogged by the worst deficit in Canadian history, Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government is throwing around money it doesn’t have on summits in Huntsville and Toronto that are ironically devoted to coming to grips with huge government debt.

Harper and friends blame "liberals" for 1 f*cking billion dollar G20 bill
Trying to deflect blame (something conservatives love to do) for the 1 billion dollar G20 bill, we get this little gem:
As the public outcry grows against the huge cost for the three-day meeting, Public Safety Minister Vic Toews told CTV’s Question Period yesterday that using the military – which would have been a much cheaper option than the RCMP – would have provoked political outrage from the Liberals.
“You know, of course, what the opposition parties would say, the Liberals, they would say the army in streets with guns,” said Mr. Toews.
In part says Mr. Toews decisions around security were “political decisions.”

Aid experts alarmed by Canada’s new anti-abortion stand in foreign policy have been advised to “shut the f--- up” or risk Prime Minister Stephen Harper taking even more harsh measures – abroad, or maybe even at home if abortion becomes an election issue.
“We’ve got five weeks or whatever left until G-8 starts. Shut the f--- up on this issue,” Conservative Senator Nancy Ruth told a group of international-development advocates who gathered on Parliament Hill on Monday to sound the alarm about Canada’s hard-right stand against abortion in foreign aid.
“If you push it, there will be more backlash,” Ruth said. “This is now a political football. This is not about women’s health in this country.”

Canada has dropped a proposal to change the country's national anthem by making it more gender-inclusive.
The government had said it was open to changing a lyric in O Canada - "in all thy sons command" - to the original version, "in thou dost us command".
Opposition Liberals said the proposed change was merely a gimmick that proved the ruling Conservatives were not serious about women's rights.
Public outcry was so strong PM Stephen Harper dropped the idea after two days.

Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney blocked any reference to gay rights in a new study guide for immigrants applying for Canadian citizenship, The Canadian Press has learned.
Internal documents show an early draft of the guide contained sections noting that homosexuality was decriminalized in 1969; that the Charter of Rights and Freedoms forbids discrimination based on sexual orientation; and that same-sex marriage was legalized nationally in 2005.
But Kenney, who fought same-sex marriage when it was debated in Parliament, ordered those key sections removed when his office sent its comments to the department last June. Senior department officials duly cut out the material, but made a last-ditch plea with Kenney in early August to have it reinstated.

Thousands protest Harper
The Canadians Against Proroguing Parliament (CAPP) protest in Toronto featured an impressive turnout, with police estimating anywhere between 10,000 and 12,000 people in attendance (note: some estimates have the turnout at only 3000). Beginning with a rally at Yonge-Dundas square, the protesters eventually took to the streets shortly after 2 p.m., drawing a loop that took them over to City Hall and then across College St. before returning to their original location.

We may not like Harper here at Lord of the Universe, but the Liberals have gone and done something stupid that might actually help him in the long run.

The Liberal Party of Canada has been forced to apologize after showing a fake picture of Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper being assassinated on the party's official website.
The Liberal Party website had been hosting a picture contest where readers could create images of Harper in fictional situations. The contest had been designed to criticize the prime minister's perceived reluctance to attend climate change talks in Copenhagen by showing locations that he would rather be in.
However, one shocking photo had the Prime Minister's head digitally replacing the head of Lee Harvey Oswald in a picture that showed Oswald as he is shot and killed by Jack Ruby.

A giant orb glows in a major city square, while in another part of Copenhagen, new steel cages await unruly protestors--all signs that the United Nations climate negotiations are underway in Denmark's capital.
On Sunday, I sat down with Amber Church, the national director for the Canadian Youth Climate coalition, to get her take on the Canadian negotiating team for the next two weeks.
The 28-year-old calls Canada a "lost lemming" in the global climate negotiations, which has even fallen behind the U.S. with its inaction.
"Right now Canada is not leading--it's not even following very well because Environment Minister Jim Prentice's line is 'We can't do anything until the U.S. does something,'" Church says. "To be perfectly honest, the U.S. is ahead of us and we're not even following very well."
Her advice for Canada in Copenhagen? "Canada should lead, follow or get out of the way," Church says.

Defense Minister Peter MacKay stated the testimony of a top diplomat’s claims of torture and rape committed against Afghani detainees are not credible and said calls for an inquiry will not be followed up.
Dismissing information from Richard Colvin, once in command of the most large scale insurgencies over the past 15 years, as second or third hand knowledge, MacKay spoke for the Harper Government in stating there would be no further fact finding into Colvin’s particular claim of detainee handling.

Something is rotten in Harperland
We seem to be living through the worse government this country has ever seen, and after Mulroney that's quite the achievement.
The whole afraid concerning the Canadian woman Suaad Hagi Mohamud, who was detained in Kenya charged with being an impostor, keeps getting stranger.
The Canadian diplomat who officially disowned Suaad Hagi Mohamud as an "imposter" has been recalled from Kenya.
Liliane Khadour has "concluded" her posting, a consular official at the Canadian High Commission said yesterday from the capital, Nairobi.
"Her tour of duty is over," he said, explaining that Foreign Affairs employees rotate posts every two or three years, and Khadour had been in Nairobi for two. "I am not very sure where she went."
Khadour is now in Ottawa.
Although she owns a condominium apartment there with her partner, Jason Joyce, the two are staying at a downtown hotel. Both had been working at the commission in Nairobi as first secretaries.
When reached by cellphone yesterday, Joyce hung up almost immediately. Neither answered the phone in their hotel room or returned messages.
The Canada Border Services Agency has opened an internal investigation into the handling of Mohamud's case.
Had this been a white woman, the Harper government would have had her back in 24 hours, given her a ticker tape parade, and blamed the whole thing on the Liberals...

The fate of this year’s Divers/Cité festival in Montreal was up in the air on Wednesday after the federal government said it would not approve funding for the event.
Divers/Cité, Montreal’s gay pride arts festival, was counting on $155,000 in new funding from Ottawa.
In an email from Industry Canada, spokeswoman Christiane Fox said there are just too many worthwhile events to allow government funding for all of them.
Bullshit, the FrancoFolies just got 1.5 million.
