Taking the city's battle to clean up Toronto digital, Rob Ford visited a lane way near St. Clair and Lansdowne to unveil a new mobile app that lets citizens report unwanted graffiti instantly. Instead of coughing up for a phone call, smart phone users can now snap a picture and whisk it off to 311 for processing.
"This is as efficient as it gets," remarked Ford at press conference earlier today. "This will make it easier than ever to report graffiti vandalism and help keep the city spotless.

Oooooo Doug Ford is *so* butch
Councillor Doug Ford, under fire at City Hall for his outspoken, bare-knuckle style, says being a politician is the only thing that stopped him from fighting a verbally abusive bicycle courier last week...
...The councillor, trying to drive into underground parking, got out because the courier was blocking him from pushing a button, he said.
“I told him if I wasn’t an elected official I’d kick his ass in about 10 seconds,” Doug Ford said. But the courier was still cursing him when he walked up from the garage, he said.
You go girl. Not to be outdone, Rob has this to add...

Toronto City council kiss Rob Ford's ass
That could take some time...
City council has excused Mayor Rob Ford after the city’s integrity commissioner found he improperly solicited charitable donations from lobbyists for his football foundation.
In August 2010, council accepted the finding of integrity commissioner Janet Leiper and directed the mayor to reimburse the donors.
Because he hadn’t done so, the issue returned to council but this time, council voted 22-12 to rescind its earlier decision and take no action against the mayor.
The move indicates there are no consequences if a member of city council runs afoul of their code of conduct, said Councillor Paula Fletcher, an opponent of the mayor.

The closest I’ll ever get to one of these condos is when I tiptoe into the presentation centre. I am a lifelong renter. I have no credit history. My mortgage application would make even the kindliest banker bust a gut. This isn’t a complaint. I’ve made a conscious choice to live my life a certain way, to eschew money for time — time to write, to stroll, to enjoy an afternoon espresso — and now my lifestyle is being used to sell a condo that I could never afford — because of my lifestyle.

Sunrise Propane explosion finally goes to trial
Took their fucking time about it, no?
The Ontario government’s court case against Sunrise Propane begins on Monday, more than three years after the company’s facility in northwest Toronto exploded, killing a worker and forcing thousands to flee their homes.
Sunrise employee Parminder Saini died in the explosion and firefighter Bob Leek suffered a fatal heart attack while battling the fire that followed. The blast sent up a fireball that could be seen across the city and forced the evacuation of 12,000 people from their Downsview neighbourhood homes.
The company faces several charges under provincial labour and environmental laws for its role in the Aug. 10, 2008, explosion that charged the lives of those who live near the fuel depot at 62 Murray Rd., in the area of Keele Street and Wilson Avenue.

Rob Ford: Idiot of the Day
Toronto Mayor Rob Ford compared his political opponents at city hall to despot Joseph Stalin on Tuesday, the same day that one of those councillors had praised the mayor for a new attitude.
Speaking on Toronto radio station AM 640, Ford was asked a question about Coun. Josh Matlow — a first-term politician usually described as centrist, who has said he will oppose the mayor's planned abolishment of the land transfer tax.
After calling Matlow a "left-wing NDPer," Ford compared him to left-leaning councillors Adam Vaughan, Gord Perks, Janet Davis and Paula Fletcher.
"These people are all two steps left of Joe Stalin," he said. "So I'm not discouraged by that and I don't expect it. They don't care about the taxpayers. But I know one person that does, and that's me."

Police union attempt to get themselves off the hook for G20
They'll do it too. No official will ever be held accountable for the fuck up that was the G20.
The head of the Toronto Police Association says he intends to challenge any attempt to lay disciplinary charges against five officers involved in the 2010 arrest of G20 protester Adam Nobody.
Best bullshit:
Mike McCormack said Friday that the investigation took too long.
"The association takes the position on a point of principle," he said. "These things should be concluded within a reasonable timeframe, like any other investigation."

Former Pages bookstore now a f*cking condo sales centre
Priorities people priorities! Tocondo doesn't care about reading, but does about shiny new pens for the sheep.
Two and a half years ago, after three decades at 256 Queen Street West, Pages Books & Magazines announced it would close its storefront because its rent was being pushed too high. Turns out the rent was pushed too high for anyone: the space was still vacant this summer, when the realtor told The Grid’s Jacob Rutka that ”Pages closed during the height of recession….Youth brands in the Queen West area have all suffered. Commercial prices on Queen between Spadina and University are just too expensive.” (Pages is still alive now, but the store’s moved “beyond bricks and mortar.”)
It’d take two whole years before something finally moved into Pages’ former home. That new tenant? A condo sales centre (or “presentation gallery”) for Picasso on Richmond—a 39-storey condo coming at 318 Richmond Street West.

Toronto’s newest piece of street furniture was going to be the centrepiece of a state-of-the-art tourist information system and then it was redesigned. Now that it’s being placed on downtown sidewalks, public-space activists are making their opinion clear: They hate it.
Why? Because they say it looks like nothing more than a garish billboard.
The city calls them “information pillars,” but opponents say that name is disingenuous. “They’re 95-per-cent advertising and the information they offer is of negligible value,” said Tim Grant chair of the Harbord Village Residents’ Association. “It is clearly a billboard.”

Tocondo condo investors flee as there are too many pens for the sheep
Investors rushed to buy Toronto condos in the good times, now there is a worry that they will rush for the exits as the economy weakens and they realize that profits are hard to come by in an overbuilt market.
A record number of condos were built in the past year in the Greater Toronto Area, with some 43,000 units under construction. Anecdotal evidence suggests many of the units were sold to investors who plan to rent them out, but a flood of supply hitting the market at once could drive rents below what’s needed to generate a profit.

Rob Ford doesn't want us to know who he meets with
Mayor Rob Ford’s office is continuing to thwart efforts to get a peek at his daily itinerary, raising questions from Ontario’s information and privacy watchdog about his commitment to transparency and accountability.
The mayor has denied a request from The Globe and Mail to obtain his schedule within 30 days. The reason given was that meeting the time limit would bog down the Office of the Mayor.

On the day his former press aide took up a job at the Toronto Sun, Mayor Rob Ford insisted he won’t play favourites with the city’s news outlets. “If people want to read a paper, pick up the Globe, Post, or Sun,” he said in a Friday morning radio interview.
Still, those outlets might not want to trumpet the endorsement too loudly because the mayor made it by way of criticizing the Toronto Star. It’s the latest move in an unusual campaign his administration has waged against the paper for a July, 2010, article that put his nose out of joint, about his aggressive style as a high school football coach. Mayor Ford initiated legal action, which has lapsed.

In an email obtained by the Star, Ford’s constituency assistant, Anna Vescio, asked a Toronto District School Board trustee to circulate a brochure touting an initiative called UFC Community Works.
According to the brochure, the program promotes “the development of discipline, respect, teamwork, honesty, time management and physical fitness” through mixed martial arts training and meetings with UFC fighters.
UFC has become notorious for its brutal, bloody, no-holds barred fighting. Mixed martial arts events were banned in Ontario until this year.

Tocondo's rich to have yet another erection

City-owned development agency Build Toronto announced Tuesday its first partnership will be with widely known developer Tridel, which will collaborate on a 75-storey, $295-million residential building in the downtown area.
The partnership, the first since the city established Build Toronto as an independent and self-funding real estate and development corporation, will develop the project at 10 York St. in the emerging Harbourfront neighbourhood.
"This is, pardon me for saying so, one hell of a deal," said Lorne Braithwaite the CEO of Build Toronto, at a news conference announcing the project.
Condo builders, modest as always...
"I [Mayor Ford]* can assure you we have some of the brightest real estate minds in the entire country ... sitting on Build Toronto's board," he said.
Tridel president Leo DelZotto said the site "offers the opportunity to create a condominium development that will be spectacular."
