Twitter becomes marketer's pimp

Companies are now able to search and analyse up to two years of Twitter updates for market research purposes.

Firms can search tweets back to January 2010 in order to plan marketing campaigns, target influential users or even try to predict certain events.

Until today, only the previous 30 days of tweets were available for companies to search. Regular users can access posts from the past seven days.

Twitter's IQ goes up as Aston Kutcher stops tweeting

Pledging on Wednesday night to stop Tweeting until he finds "a way to properly manage this feed," Ashton Kutcher has arrived at a solution.

"I feel responsible for delivering an informed opinion and not spreading gossip or rumors through my Twitter feed," Kutcher wrote in a blog post entitled "Twitter Management" on Thursday. "While I feel that running this feed myself gives me a closer relationship to my friends and fans, I've come to realize that it has grown into more [than] a fun tool to communicate with people."

Newt Gingrich: Twidiot of the Day

Gingrich complained yesterday that the press is ignoring his prodigious Twitter audience: "I have six times as many Twitter followers as all the other candidates combined, but it didn't count because if it counted I'd still be a candidate; since I can't be a candidate that can't count." Which is true! Gingrich currently boasts 1,325,842 followers, whereas competitors Mitt Romney and Michele Bachmann have yet to crack 100,000.

But if Newt is winning the Twitter primary, it's because of voter fraud. A former staffer tells us that his campaign hired a firm to boost his follower count, in part by creating fake accounts en masse:

Microsoft: Twidiot of the Day

Microsoft has apologised after being accused by Amy Winehouse fans of trying to make money from her death.

It's after Xbox360's official Twitter account, tweetbox360, posted a message urging people to pay tribute to the star by using Microsoft's online store to buy her album.

It read "remember Amy Winehouse by downloading the ground-breaking 'Back to Black' over at Zune".

One response came from Simacco: "Talk about cashing in on someone's death!"

Uptown Sports Management: Vile Homophobes of the Day

Uptown Sports Management, an Ontario, Canada-based agency which represents a number of NHL players including Andrew Brunette, Cody McCormick, Chris Neil, Mike Fisher and Carlo Colaiacovo, attacked New York Ranger forward Sean Avery for getting involved with the campaign for marriage equality in New York...

...Wrote the agency in a tweet: "Very sad to read Sean Avery's misguided support of same-gender 'marriage'. Legal or not, it will always be wrong." The tweet was followed up by two more denying anti-gay bigotry, and saying, "This is my personal viewpoint. I Do not hate anyone."

Whatever, no one is buying your* bullshit.

* A one Todd Reynolds "In Canada and the U.S. it’s a hot-button topic right now. I guess maybe it was how I was raised (for an example of that "raising", see below). I believe in voicing your opinion and not being part of the silent majority"

The Silent Majority. Now Nixonian, ah the nostalgia...now where was I? Oh yes. Notice how he assumes he's in the majority?

It's an "issue" in Canada (where marriage has been legal for years, and it's not really an issue) only to bigots like Mr. Reynolds as they didn't get their way to continue centuries of repression.

And all this happened under a conservative government (and even they tried and failed to prevent it). That must be particularly galling to Mr. Reynolds. If you can't count on conservatives to keep a minority down, what has the world come to?

Progress is a bitch, eh Todd? Now we all get to voice our opinion of your droppings of wisdom.

Oh wait, your dad has spoken up:

It’s politically correct on the other side, for people to say, ‘sure, I support gay marriage.’ But the majority, I think, of Canadians would say that they don’t agree with gay marriage – that man and woman were created to be married, not man and man or man and horse, you know?

There's that "majority" word again. If 99/100 people want to act like swine, then it must be ok.

Mr. Reynolds Sr., that level of comment deserves only a heart felt "fuck you".

For those keeping score, the Reynolds are the good guys. They must be, they say they are.

Apologists emerge for Gilbert Gottfried

It had been about a month since Gilbert Gottfried lobbed those brutally crude jokes about the Japanese tsunami when I met him earlier this week. He still seemed a little stunned by the reaction, which included a public drubbing by the morality police, and being fired as the voice of the Aflac spokesduck. Still, he couldn't quite make himself grovel for forgiveness. "You start to feel sorry, and then you wonder what you're feeling sorry for," he says. "That I made jokes?

Oh not just jokes, but totally insensitive morally reprehensible ones.

No one stopped him actually making these jokes, but reacted to them as a normal person with a heart would.

It's not edgy, it's human.
