An Arab and Western-backed resolution condemning the violent crackdown in Syria has been vetoed at the UN Security Council by Russia and China.
They rejected the draft as "unbalanced" hours after activists accused troops of killing at least 55 people at Homs.
Western countries said the move would encourage Syria's government to continue its violent clampdown.
A BBC correspondent who entered Homs with rebels after the vote says gun and shell fire can be heard in the city.

WTF? US marines to be based in Australia
The United States announced an agreement with Australia Wednesday that will expand military cooperation between the long-time allies and boost America's presence in the region...
...Under the agreement, up to 250 U.S. Marines will be sent to Darwin and the northern region of Australia for military exercises and training. Over the next several years their numbers are expected to climb to 2,500 -- a full Marine ground task force.
While U.S. officials cited the need to respond to regional natural disasters as a reason for the agreement, concern over China's military expansion is widely acknowledged as a driving factor.

Harper and Co., along with B.C, don't want China to know Canada has gay people
It just brims with bigoted conservatives though.
British Columbia tourism operators marketing their products in China must avoid any promotions in that country involving gay tourism, casinos or gambling. That’s the message included in a brochure the B.C government sent to business owners starting last Thursday, entitled: How to Market Your Business to China.
“In alignment with the [Canadian Tourism Commission], Tourism BC will also require that any partner operator agrees to ... prohibit the promotion of casinos, gambling and gay tourism, per the China National Tourism Administration,” reads a passage in the 58-page brochure.
Casinos? Gambling? Harper obviously doesn't know any Asia people.

The Georgetown University Hoyas and The Bayi Rockets highlight US/China relations
Mr Biden's visit [to China] was overshadowed by a brawl at an exhibition basketball game between a US and a Chinese team....
...On Thursday, a goodwill basketball game ended in a punch-up between the Georgetown University Hoyas, from Washington DC, and the Bayi Rockets.
Amateur video of the fight shows Chinese players wielding metal chairs while fans jeer and toss water bottles at the American players.
The game at the Beijing Olympic Sports Centre Stadium had to be stopped with just over nine minutes left on the clock and the score tied at 64.

China's heavy hand on the Net delights governments everywhere
Governments everywhere are watching, jealous they can't control the Net to this extent.
More than one million websites closed down in China last year, a state-run think tank has said.
The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences said there were were 41% fewer websites at the end of 2010 than a year earlier.
Chinese officials have tightened regulations on the internet in recent years, and they launched a crackdown on pornography websites in 2009.
The academy's researcher said there was no link, insisting China had a "high level of freedom of online speech".
Compared to none, I guess anything would seem "high"

World in mortal danger if China ever masters Photoshop
Until then we can all laugh at a superbly inept propagandist.
On the afternoon of June 27, our reader interviewed the Huili County Government publicity department director Zhang Yongzhi. According to Zhang, several county leaders went out to inspect the road. An accompanying worker took some photos for the record. But when it came to posting onto the website, the worker decided that "the background of the original photo did not look very good" so a decision was made to crop the leaders onto a different background. The Huili County Government has removed all relevant information and reprimanded the worker who handled the photo. The Huili County Government issued an apology at the Tianya Forum and the Sina.com Weibo.

Lawsuit contents Cisco aided China in repression
Senior executives at Cisco Systems worked closely with Chinese government security agents to tailor hardware and software they knew would be used to track, detain and torture followers of the banned Falun Gong spiritual movement, according to a U.S. federal lawsuit filed last week.
The suit accuses the networking company’s chief executive John Chambers and leaders of Cisco’s China business of close collaboration with Beijing, citing statements on company websites, at trade shows and in internal documents.

China to the US: STFU about Human Rights, hypocrite
Opps, ignoring the Geneva Convention has repercussions...
China has told the US to stop preaching on human rights, after the state department's annual report on the issue criticised China.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said the US should concentrate on its own rights issues and stop interfering.
Chinese authorities have launched a major crackdown on dissent recently.
Unveiling the report, US officials expressed particular concern over the recent arrest of the artist Ai Weiwei, an outspoken critic of the government.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also highlighted reports of other intellectuals and activists being "arbitrarily detained" in recent weeks.
Mr Hong said China was happy to talk about rights "on the basis of equality and mutual respect", but added that Beijing "resolutely opposes" meddling in other country's affairs.
"We advise the US side to reflect on its own human rights issues and not to position itself as a preacher of human rights," he said.

Any meeting between President Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama would harm bilateral relations, China warned Tuesday while repeating Beijing's refusal to discuss Tibet's status with the spiritual leader's envoys.
An Obama meeting with the Tibetan spiritual leader would "seriously undermine the political foundation of Sino-U.S. relations," said Zhu Weiqun, the executive deputy head of the Communist Party's United Front Work Department who was in charge recent talks with the Dalai Lama's representatives.

Google to China: F*ck You
Google responds to cyber attacks "on our corporate infrastructure originating from China that resulted in the theft of intellectual property from Google".
These attacks and the surveillance they have uncovered--combined with the attempts over the past year to further limit free speech on the web--have led us to conclude that we should review the feasibility of our business operations in China. We have decided we are no longer willing to continue censoring our results on Google.cn, and so over the next few weeks we will be discussing with the Chinese government the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all. We recognize that this may well mean having to shut down Google.cn, and potentially our offices in China.

Gao Ye gets outed, Green Damn it!
Brutal repressive regimes are rarely funny, but sometimes....
In an effort to expose how evil Google is, China's state TV (CCTV..why are odious government organizations always called that?) ran an interview with a university student, Gao Ye...
He said in the interview, 'I have this fellow student and he’s been curious about these kinds of things [porn searches on Google]. He visited porn Web sites and ended up becoming absent-minded for a while.'
Ok sure whatever...um what was I saying?
Oh yes. Well it seems Mr. Gao is an employee of said CCTV. What a coincidence!

Green Damn bursts
Caving to public pressure, China on Tuesday said that use of its controversial "Green Dam Youth Escort" software is not required, though all PCs sold on the mainland will come with it pre-installed.
China's turnaround comes as public outcry over the Green Dam Web filtering software struck a nerve both inside and outside China. Last week, the Chinese government mandated that as of July 1, all PCs sold in the country must have the Green Dam software to block pornographic and violent Web sites. The public fought back, claiming the software could also block users from viewing political content and censor other content. Some opponents also contend that the software can create security vulnerabilities that can be exploited by hackers.

Leaving the fact it's an odious concept aside for a moment, doesn't the name itself denote a cluelessness on an epic scale?
Western governments are probably eying the software hungrily, saying "We must protect the children!" (by treating adults as children). It's bullshit of course (what they mean is "we must protect ourselves from our citizens"), but that tired old line works =(
China has defended the use of new screening software that has to be installed on all computers.
Foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang said the software would filter out pornographic or violent material...

China covers the internet with umbrellas
China plans to require that all personal computers sold in the country as of July 1 be shipped with software that blocks access to certain Web sites, a move that could give government censors unprecedented control over how Chinese users access the Internet.
The government, which has told global PC makers of the requirement but has yet to announce it to the public, says the effort is aimed at protecting young people from "harmful" content. The primary target is pornography, says the main developer of the software, a company that has ties to China's security ministry and military.

China is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen crackdown with another crackdown -- a massive block on Twitter and all those social media sites that pose a threat to China's government this week. The Chinese media site Danwei reported early Tuesday morning that Twitter, the popular microblogging site, has been disabled in mainland China. Thursday, June 4th marks the 20th anniversary of the pro-democracy protests in Tiananmen Square and the brutal response by the Chinese government that left hundreds dead.
As the morning moved on, China-based bloggers realized that YouTube, Flickr and Bing, Microsoft's new search engine, had also been blocked.

China's first sex theme park, aimed at improving both the sex education and the sex life of its visitors, has been torn down before it even opened.
The owners were "interested only in profiting from sensationalism," the China Daily reported one official said.
Due to open in Chongqing in October, Love Land was to have included displays of giant genitalia, naked bodies and an exhibition on the history of sex.
The park was set to offer workshops on sex technique and safe-sex methods.
But the plans left Chongqing officials red-faced, correspondents say.
The officials called the planned park "vulgar, ill-minded and misleading", said China Daily.

China will never adopt Western-style democracy with a multi-party system, its top legislator has said.
Parliament chief Wu Bangguo said that China would draw on the achievements of all cultures but would not "simply copy" the West.
Communist Party leadership should be strengthened and "the correct political orientation" maintained, he said.

Despite assurances by Chinese officials that all three are 16, the minimum age of eligibility for Olympic competition, newly discovered documents and records prove otherwise.
