Martin Knelman uses Montreal icon Mordecai Richler to whine on about Toronto

Let Toronto trump Montreal as culture capital

Ok, sure...

It’s true Richler never cheered for the Maple Leafs, remaining ever loyal to his beloved Canadiens. While throngs of Montreal’s English-speaking elite took a one-way trip down the 401 and became happy exiles in a city they once considered beneath them, Richler hunkered down on Sherbrooke Street West, refusing to be scared off by zealous Quebec nationalists.

Officially, he took swipes at Toronto, viewing it as lacking the charm and European style of Montreal. But I believe that in his latter years, Toronto became Richler’s secret haven, the city of which he grew increasingly fond, even if he would never admit it.
