The bad dream of DRM continues. Yahoo e-mailed its Yahoo! Music Store customers yesterday, telling them it will be closing for good—and the company will take its DRM license key servers offline on September 30, 2008. Sure, it's bad news and yet another example of the sheer lobotomized brain-deadness that has characterized music DRM, but the reaction of most music fans will be: "Yahoo had an online music store?"
And you wonder why corporations are hated?

Fuck you Yahoo
Internet giant Yahoo has settled a lawsuit brought by the families of a Chinese dissident and a journalist, who claim they were jailed after the company cooperated with Chinese authorities, according to court documents.Notification of the settlement was filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in the Northern District of California.
An attorney involved in the case who did not want to be identified told CNN the amount of the settlement was not disclosed.
The case was filed by dissident Wang Xiaoning; his wife, Yu Ling; Shi Tao, a reporter for a Chinese newspaper; and others not identified in court documents.
China's communist government sentenced Wang to 10 years in prison for sending out pro-democracy blogs.
Although he was sentenced in 2002 and has already served five years, Yu told CNN she only recently received court documents in the case. Those documents itemized the information Yahoo provided to the government.
Shi landed in trouble three years ago when the Chinese government prohibited journalists to report on the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in 1989.
When Shi forwarded the notice to human rights groups, the Chinese government pressured Yahoo to give them the name of the account holder, and they did so. Shi was also sentenced to 10 years in prison.
My contempt for Yahoo runs deep at this point...

However, none of that was included in the final settlement, he said.

Fuck you Yahoo
Internet giant Yahoo has asked a US court to dismiss a lawsuit accusing it of complicity in rights abuses and acts of torture in China.
The firm filed a motion for dismissal saying its Chinese subsidiary had no choice but to comply with local laws.
You had a choice, you chose the wrong side that's all...
Yahoo is so full of shit on this one.
Ethical responsibilities
In its 40-page response to the lawsuit, filed with a federal court in San Francisco, Yahoo acknowledged releasing information to the Chinese government.
But it argued that there was little connection between the information the firm gave and the ensuing arrests and imprisonment of its users.
Yahoo said that while it did not condone the suppression of people's liberties, the firm had been compelled by local laws to hand over the information that was requested.
"Defendants cannot be expected, let alone ordered to violate another nation's laws," the company said in its filing.

The internet firms argue it is better to offer Chinese users some information than none at all.

Chinese couple sue Yahoo! in US over torture case
In a brave legal action against the great firewall of China, a jailed political prisoner and his wife have sued Yahoo! in a US court, accusing the internet firm of contributing to torture by helping authorities identify dissidents who were later beaten and imprisoned.
It won't happen, but I hope this fucks Yahoo over.

The human rights group Amnesty accuses Yahoo!, as well as Microsoft and Google, of facilitating or colluding in China's censorship of the net. Amnesty rejects the argument that the companies are "bringing the internet to China" , saying they are merely interested in getting into the market.
