Bishop afraid Christmas becoming "fairy story"

He's 2000 years too late.

Popular Christmas carols contain "nonsense", and adults who sing them should be embarrassed, the Bishop of Croydon has said in a book.

The Rt Rev Nick Baines criticised adults singing Away In A Manger "as if it related to reality".

The bishop also suggested that the last word of the title O Come All Ye Faithful be changed to "faithless".

He said Christmas was being sentimentalised into a fairy story, which he said was "tragic".

In a book entitled Why Wish You a Merry Christmas?, the bishop wrote: "I always find it a slightly bizarre sight when I see parents and grandparents at a nativity play singing Away In A Manger as if it actually related to reality.

Rogers to launch crippled online viewing service

the company announced the online portal would launch next Monday November 30th with approximately 1,500 videos and 15 content providers.

But it's from Rogers, so you know there will be negative aspects, such as:

Unlike most cable on demand services which remove advertising, online viewers will be required to watch commercials and will not be able to fast forward through them. While navigating the portal, users will be required to view banner ads and other online promotional material. Once the tv shows begin, commercial programs, such as those seen on CityTV and Sportsnet will air with commercials

So even though we pay to gain access (be a Rogers customer), we still will be bombarded with ads. This is a glimpse of what the cable companies want for the net as a whole...

and...

The shows will be streamed at a low quality 480 kps with an option to be delivered at a higher quality 1 Mbps. Although more than twice the low quality feed, the 1 Mbps option is still much less than the high definition video you receive on your television, which is typically 12 to 14 Mbps per second. Clearly this online on-demand service is best used for viewing on your computer or your wireless phone.

Rogers High Speed Internet customers should note that the Rogers On Demand online service will count towards their bandwidth cap meaning a high quality feed could use up a gigabyte of bandwidth in just over two hours.

So basically, it's a advertising streaming service, with shows to interrupt them...

Pass.

Microsoft is always entertaining, if only in the depts of its cluelessness.

Microsoft may f*ck with the Internet...again

Microsoft has had discussions with News Corp over a plan that would involve the media company being paid to “de-index” its news websites from Google, setting the scene for a search engine battle that could offer a ray of light to the newspaper industry.

The impetus for the discussions came from News Corp, owner of newspapers ranging from the Wall Street Journal of the US to The Sun of the UK, said a person familiar with the situation, who warned that talks were at an early stage.

However, the Financial Times has learnt that Microsoft has also approached other big online publishers to persuade them to remove their sites from Google’s search engine.

Harper government takes cowardly stand on torture

Obviously, someone has something to hide...

Defense Minister Peter MacKay stated the testimony of a top diplomat’s claims of torture and rape committed against Afghani detainees are not credible and said calls for an inquiry will not be followed up.

Dismissing information from Richard Colvin, once in command of the most large scale insurgencies over the past 15 years, as second or third hand knowledge, MacKay spoke for the Harper Government in stating there would be no further fact finding into Colvin’s particular claim of detainee handling.

Rape of Star Trek continues

And co-writer Roberto Orci says that even if Khan is in the sequel, chances are it'll be a character they created, who they then decide to turn into Khan:

Cause in a way, even if we do Khan, or not, we're trying to approach the story as just what's best for it, and then [asking] can that character become Khan or not, you know. You're not trying to rely on previous knowledge or love of it, so you almost want to strip all the names away and just come up with the emotional forces and the scientific forces that are going to come into play, and then start letting the details kind of bleed in.

Translation: We really don't care about classic Trek, and will basically do whatever we want. Holy Fuck, is this a cash cow or what?

Canadian government turns a blind eye to torture

Yet again, Harper and our Conservative government embarrass and shame us on a global scale.

Senior Canadian military and government officials ignored evidence that Afghan authorities were torturing detainees handed over by Canada's troops and then tried to silence those who raised the alarm, a senior diplomat said on Wednesday.

Richard Colvin said many of those arrested by the Canadian military were innocent and the practice of handing over prisoners knowing they could be abused was a war crime.

The startling public allegations -- the first of their kind from a senior official -- is likely to embarrass the minority Conservative government, which has insisted detainees were not passed to Afghan control if there was any danger of torture.

It's still 1959 in the U.S. regarding Cuba

School board members in Miami have won their battle to remove a children's book from the shelves of Miami-Dade school libraries because they said the book presented an inaccurate picture of life in Cuba.

On Monday, the US Supreme Court declined to take up the case of "Vamos a Cuba" – the little book that sparked a big controversy over alleged censorship in Miami.

The action lets stand a 2-1 ruling by the 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals that the school board's decision to remove the book was not censorship in violation of the First Amendment. Instead, the Atlanta-based appeals court said the school board was seeking to remove the book because it contained substantial factual inaccuracies.

To Skip, friend of Doug Lambert

"Skip" has penned a blog post, not so much defending his friend Doug Lambert as expressing frustration that his "apology" has not been accepted in certain circles (Many on the Left / Democrats).

Now, while standing up for a friend is an admirable thing to do, his reasons are less so. Calls for Mr. Lambert's punishment and firing are only "political correctness". It never enters his head that perhaps words can wound, or worse.

No, to Skip it just seems certain things can't be said anymore, and it's a darn shame. Where are the good old days when abuse could be hurled at minorities without any consequences? The pressure not to isn't because they are wrong, but only because it is not PC to state them publicly. Would Skip defend the use of "Nigger" as a PC issue? I doubt it. But "Faggot", sure, bring it on.

As an Canadian observer, the Right in the U.S. is the best at coming up with slogans to hide the real meaning of things: friendly fire, collateral damage, enhanced interrogation techniques, the sanity of marriage. More often than not they conceal something uglier (God help us if our conservatives get as crafty).

Doug, I'm afraid, was not that eloquent.

I do agree with Skip here though: For folks like you, and your brethren in CA who have literally have had people fired and businesses shut down merely for supporting CA's Proposition 8, it seems that NO apology will ever be sufficient.

The difference is Prop 8 was a legally sanctioned vote (however spiteful, I come from Quebec and know just how spiteful a majority can be), and voters did speak (with no apology). The ballot though was not worded "Do you support the suppression of the rights of those uppity faggots?", even *if* that was the message behind it.

The other side doesn't have to like the outcome, and should boycott business etc that went along if they choose to. Beyond that is to become as bad as the Prop 8 supporters: spiteful, mean spirited and poking their nose into other peoples lives.

An apology is not the end game they seek

True Skip, so true. There comes a point when the name calling has to stop, and your friend is a good a point as any to begin. He seems to have had no problem in inflicting pain on millions of his fellow citizens (and probably delighting millions of others), so a little time of self reflection while he awaits his next gig is a small price to pay.

Do you think Doug will turn over a new leaf? No, I don't think so either....

I mean, as long as their paying their "American taxes" like the rest of us...as you said. After all, wouldn't it be kind of hypocritical to discriminate against one sexual preference over another? And I'm intentionally leaving out the catagory of pedophiles just to keep the discussion simple.

Sarah Palin: Facts? We don't need no stinkin' facts

Former Alaska Governor lashed out at the Associated Press Sunday for doing a fact-check on her memoir, "Going Rogue."

"Amazingly, but not surprisingly, the AP somehow nabbed a copy of the book before it was released," she wrote on her Facebook page. "They're now erroneously reporting on the book's contents and are repeating many of the same things they spewed during the campaign and afterwards. We've heard 11 writers are engaged in this opposition research, er, "fact checking" research!"

The AP reported that Palin's account often contradicted her record as well as current events. Her depiction of the McCain campaign is also frequently at odds with internal campaign emails.

Doug Lambert: Flaming Bigot of the Day

The more this kind of person rants and raves, the more it exposes their point of view for what is it: irrational and at the level of the school yard taunt.

It would be amusing if for the fact it can also lead to violence, as their intellectual arguments are nil and it's all they have left.

After his radio show "Meet the New Press" ended today, GraniteGrok.com co-founder Doug Lambert looked into a live web-streaming camera, mockingly wished state [New Hampshire] Democratic Party Chairman Ray Buckley a Happy Birthday and then called Buckley a "faggot" before basically wishing him dead.

...After co-host Skip Murphy said that he should probably shut off the feed, Lambert looked into the camera and said, "Speaking of gays, Happy Birthday Ray Buckley. Are you going to Holland or taking another trip with your buddies?"

He then dances in a way meant to mock a gay male and says:"Yeah you Faggot. [Pause.] That's right I said it and I meant it. You are reprobate. How the people, the Democrats, I think of some of the gray haired ladies and older people from the old party would stand behind you is beyond me. You are a disgrace to yourself to humanity to mankind and to your party.

"Other than that Happy Birthday Ray and many more -- not," Lambert continued before the feed was quickly shut off.

US Defence Secretary Robert Gates sweeps more under the rug

Out of sight, out of mind...

The US Defence Secretary Robert Gates has blocked the publication of further images of US soldiers abusing foreign detainees.

The US administration filed a request with the Supreme Court late on Friday preventing the release of the photos.

The order refers to some 40 images, including some of prisoners being abused in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Last month, Congress gave Mr Gates new powers to prevent their release under a law signed by the US president...

...Initially, Mr Obama had suggested that he would not attempt to block the release of the photographs but he reversed this decision in May.

He said then that the release of such images would be "of no benefit" and might inflame opinion against the US.

So does blocking them Einstein.

Love filled religious people threaten violence over billboard

The history of the Middle Ages makes so much more sense if you consider is was run by people like this.

CINCINNATI -- In the wake of multiple, significant threats, the downtown billboard that says “Don’t Believe In God? You are not alone” came down early Thursday morning.

The billboard had gone up Tuesday afternoon at Reading Road and 12th Street, one block south of Liberty Street and it is being moved to a new site Thursday at the Sixth Street Viaduct.

The group that funded the billboard, the United Coalition of Reason, was contacted by Lamar Advertising of Cincinnati. Lamar reported that the landowner of the site had been threatened over the billboard's message and wanted it taken down...

..."My thoughts? I think the sign needs to come down. Its atheist. Its going to cause problems around all the churches, not just catholic, but lutheran, baptist, all of them," said Jack Jones of Downtown.

Obviously religion trumps free speech in the good old U.S.A.

POX News

One FOX News fan is not amused. I think trash itself would be more offended.

"If Mom and Dad watch cable news, it's better than 50/50 they watch 'POX News.' So what gives? PBS -- a network partially funded with my tax dollars -- has the right to tell my kids that their parents watch 'trashy' news? The message is clear, I can't even sit my kids in front of 'Sesame Street' without having to worry about the Left attempting to undermine my authority. And don't tell me, 'If you don't like it change the channel.' There are no channels left! It's everywhere. Just last week I had Obama's service and volunteerism promoted on every single major network, including Disney and Nickelodeon."

So if something is tax funded, it has to do and say what you want? Too bad that doesn't apply to things like war and suppressing minorities.

Radiohead's Ed O'Brien: Asshole of the Day

Two archaeologists employed by Gotland county were dismayed to discover the valuables had vanished when they arrived at a field in Alva in Gotland to follow up on a recent find.

"It's just as saddening every time it happens because it's our heritage that disappears," said Majvor Östergren at the Gotland County Administrative Board.

The methodical thieves dug some 250 holes in a bid to secure as much booty as possible. Östergren estimated that the impostors had made off with 500 silver pieces worth a combined total of 250,000 to 500,000 kronor ($35,000 to $70,000).

Following the raid, the field was placed under police surveillance, enabling archaeologists to continue their excavation work, news website helagotland.se reports.

At a press conference on Monday county officials displayed some of the objects overlooked by the thieves, including 100 silver coins, a gold bracteate and a silver crucifix.

Darren Rovell: An American born dimwit

Seems becoming an American citizen isn't good enough for people like Mr. Rovell...

It's a stunning headline: American Wins Men's NYC Marathon For First Time Since '82.

Unfortunately, it's not as good as it sounds.

Meb Keflezighi, who won yesterday in New York, is technically American by virtue of him becoming a citizen in 1998, but the fact that he's not American-born takes away from the magnitude of the achievement the headline implies.

His "apology" is equally small minded:

I said that Keflezighi's win, the first by an American since 1982, wasn't as big as it was being made out to be because there was a difference between being an American-born product and being an American citizen. Frankly I didn't account for the fact that virtually all of Keflezighi's running experience came as a US citizen. I never said he didn't deserve to be called American.

All I was saying was that we should celebrate an American marathon champion who has completely been brought up through the American system.

Not only is it the political and economic heart of the country, the city has a cosmopolitan air with its museums, art galleries, parks and universities. It has been Iran's capital since 1795.

But now a powerful state body, the expediency council, has approved plans by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to end Tehran's days as a capital...

...But the timing of this decision - coming as it does months after some of the worst anti-government riots Tehran has ever seen - is interesting, says Dominic Dudley, deputy editor of the London-based Middle East Economic Digest.

Tehran is very much a liberal enclave in Iran, he says - and it was many of those liberals who took to the streets complaining of fraud when conservative incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was declared winner of June's presidential election.

Blowing up the world, ok. Fuck with Islam, not so much

Welcome to the 21st century kids.

Roland Emmerich is willing to murder billions of people in his films, blow up the planet, and end life as we know it; but there’s one thing that stops him cold: Islam. Emmerich tells Sci-Fi that he’d originally planned to include a scene in his new disaster movie 2012 where the Kaaba was destroyed. It’s a cubed shaped building in Mecca and one of Islaam’s holiest sites.

So why’d he back off? You know why. Because he’s afraid of Muslims. Emmerich says, “my co-writer Harald said I will not have a fatwa on my head because of a movie.”

Yes, rap sucks, but arrested for it?

A rap by four teenagers at a McDonald's has gotten them a bad rap in one Utah city. The teens were cited by American Fork police earlier this week for disorderly conduct after they rapped their order at a McDonald's drive-through.

The teens said they were imitating a popular video on YouTube. They rapped their order, which begins with, "I need a double cheeseburger and hold the lettuce ..." once quickly before repeating it more slowly.

Spenser Dauwalder said employees at the restaurant told him and his friends they were holding up the line and needed to order or leave.

The 18-year-old said nobody was in line. He and his three 17-year-old friends left without buying anything.

American Fork Police Sgt. Gregg Ludlow says a manager wrote down the car's license plate number and called police. The teens were later cited by officers at a high school parking lot outside a volleyball match.

The Christie campaign has apparently been caught in another copyright violation issue, in addition to their run-in with Monty Python. This time, it involves the apparent unlicensed pilfering of copyrighted stock footage -- complete with the anti-piracy watermarks.

Chris Christie: Spot the Looney

Chris Christie, the Republican candidate for Governor of New Jersey in Tuesday's knife-edge gubernatorial election, has been called out as a copyright thief. The 47-year-old lawyer, who was controversially appointed by George W. Bush as a U.S. Attorney in 2001 on Karl Rove's recommendation after being a top Bush fund-raiser in the 2000 election, has created an election commercial that steals copyright-protected material from British comedy troupe Monty Python -- without permission or credit.
